ROUND UP OF FIXTURES RESULTS FROM LEAGUES

The Gaynor Cup 2023.

Reports by Bob Howson.

Match 1 – Carlow & District 4 – 2 Limerick & District.

This opening game of this prestigious tournament pitted Carlow versus Limerick & District in the great grounds of Limerick University, on a hot and really sunny afternoon, but thankfully with a slight cooling breeze.

First Half.

Limerick started off the better and put Carlow under lots of pressure, but the ball was eventually cleared, but Carlow had their hearts in their mouths in the opening exchanges.

Carlow still hadn’t fully settled and Limerick were well ‘on song’ , with some really good interplay and were dominating possession, with Aoife Grant – Limerick’s main striker really prominent.

Following a good attack by Carlow – Kayla Downes – Limerick’s keeper only partially cleared the ball and Eimear Bolger claimed possession and she lofted the ball back over Kayla’s head and into the net from 30 yards out for Carlow to take a slender, but vital 1 - 0 lead on six minutes.

Then just a couple of minutes later, a long ball out of Carlow’s defence put Ciara Milton through and she beat a defender and slotted home to double their lead to 2 – 0 and at this stage Carlow were coasting.

Limerick were fighting hard to get back into the game and they won a couple of corners that Carlow defended well.

Limerick’s Eva Loftus went on a good run and she won another corner that was taken by Leah Hannon – Carlow only partially cleared the ball and the ball was picked up by Alexandra Sheehy who fired into Carlow’s net from all of 25 yards to make the score 2 – 1 on 12 minutes.

In light of the very hot conditions, Water Breaks were allowed every quarter.

Carlow’s Eimear Bolger picked up a loose ball and shot just over from 20 yards and at this stage of the proceedings – it was pretty much end to end stuff.

Carlow’s Cara English found Ciara Milton who beat a defender and shot, but it was far too high.

Limerick’s Madison Mcguane was very prominent in midfield and every ball into Carlow’s penalty area was looking dangerous and on one occasion, Tori Byrne -Lynch put in a shot that rolled agonisingly towards the goal, but it gently hit the post and was cleared by Abby Kepple – Carlow’s keeper, with Carlow breathing a high sigh of relief.

Just after this – the Referee blew the whistle for half-time with Carlow hanging on to their 2 – 1 lead.

Second Half.

Limerick won a couple of free kicks but they came to naught ad Eva Loftus shot just over the bar and then almost immediately – Ashlee Smith went on one of her mazy runs, but her cross was blocked and cleared by Limerick’s defence.

After another water break – Carlow’s Cara English sent a long clearance out of defence and the ever vigilant Ciara Milton latched on to it and slotted the ball home on 45 minutes to make the score 3-1 to make her brace.

Just two minutes later – Madison Mcguane picked up a loose ball at the edge of Carlow’s area and her mis-hit shot went through Nicole Osborne’s legs and dribbled into the net to make the score 3 -2 and bringing Limerick back into the game.

Then both sides had good runs/crosses, but there was nobody in the centre to convert what were gilt-edged chances, so they went a begging.

Carlow were awarded a free kick 40 yards out and Ciara Milton stepped up to try her luck and she it beautifully and it went over Kayla Downes and into the net on 60 minutes to make the score 4-2 and completing her hat-trick at the same time.

There was time for more action when Ashlee Smith had a shot which fell to Ciara Milton, who curled in a shot, which hit the bar and was cleared and just after the whistle came for full time, with a win for Carlow.

Best for Limerick were Eva Lofhus, Leah Hannon, Mya Moloney and Madison Mcguane, whilst standing out for Carlow were Eimear Bolger, Cara English, Hanna Kerfah and Man of the Match and hat – trick heroine – Ciara Milton.

End of report.

Report by Bob Howson.

Match 2 -Wexford v Carlow.

On another hot and sunny morning, Wexford met Carlow for the second game in the Group Milton tages of the Group stages.

First Half.

A good run by Ciara Milton down the right and she crossed but it was blocked and Elifs Moran – Wexford’s keeper caught the loose ball and cleared her lines.

It was an edgy sort of start to the contest, with both sides tried to settle into the game.

Some good interplay from Carlow resulted in a corner and the ball was cleared off the line by the Wexford defence.

A good run by Wexford’s Kate Tompkins put her clear but her cross went straight into Carla Byrne’s hands and she cleared.

A great run by Ciara Milton left her clear and she got her shot off , but Kate Tomkins saved and cleared.

Wexford won a corner and Paige Gainfort got in a header but it went wide and at this stage Wexford were looking the more lively of the two teams, as Carlow were struggling to get forward.

Then the breakthrough came on 26 minutes when Carla Byrne hit a long ball that found Ciara Milton and she tapped the ball round Kate Tomkins and followed up and popped the ball into an empty net for Carlow to take a 0 – 1 lead.

Some good play by Laura Malone found Ciara Milton , but she was crowded out and naught came of that attack.

A good cross by Ciara Milton found Siobhan Sinnott and she tried a volley but it spun off her foot and the chance went abegging.

A good cross by Katie Ryan found Ruby Murdiff at the edge of Carlow’s penalty area and she shot well over the bar.

Half time came with Carlow hanging on to their slender 0-1 lead.

Only 3 minutes into the second half – Wexford won a corner and it was blocked, but the ball was sent in again and it bounced high and Wexford’s tall Kate Tomkins was able to use her height to flick the ball home for an equaliser at 1-1 and Wexford deserved their score.

Just a minute later, a through ball was latched on to by Ciara Milton and she ran on and slotted the ball into the net, with the outside of her boot, in what was a classy score, which was her brace and 1-2 to Carlow.

Wexford were pressing Carlow and Ruby Murdiff had a good shot that was well saved by Clara Byrne and then Siobhan Sinnott had a great run that was finally ended by the Wexford defence crowding her out.

After the water break – Wexford’s Niamh White shot just wide straight from the restart and Carlow’s Keelie Doyle went on a fine run, but she was stopped in her tracks by the Wexford defence.

Ciara Milton tried her luck from a free kick from all of 40 yards, but her shot went high and wide.

Wexford were trying their hardest to grab an equaliser and were putting Carlow under pressure but Carlow were fighting hard to rebuff all Wexford’s attacks.

Carlow’s Ashlee Smith went on a great run and fired in a cross, but it went into the side netting and a goal-kick to Wexford.

As full time approached – Carlow were showing their tactical awareness by slowing things down and taking their time over throw-ins etc and the final whistle blew and Carlow had secured their second win of the Group and sat proudly at the top of the Group with 6 points, in what was a very hard-fought win.

Best for Wexford were Isabelle Redmond, Paige Gainfort, Kate Tomkins and Niamh White, whilst standing out for Carlow were Ciara Milton with a brace of goals to add to her first match hat- trick, Jasmine Doyle, Siobhan Sinnott and Anna Cullen for terrier-like work in the heart of Carlow’s midfield against much bigger opponents.

End of Report.

Match 3 – Mayo 2 – 4 Carlow – The Gaynor Cup 2023.

Report by Bob Howson.irst Half.

On an overcast afternoon saw Mayo entertain Carlow in the last game of the Group stages of the Gaynor Cup, with Carlow having two wins under their belts and were hoping for another win to go where no Carlow Girls team had gone before and that was to ‘top their Group’ with three wins out of three.

Carlow started off at fast pace and a great run by Ashlee Smith saw her run down the left and her cross went into Ciara Milton, but her shot was blocked.

Carlow won a free kick – 35 yards out and Ciara Milton decided to try her luck with a shot, but she fired wide, by a fair margin.

Top Scorer Ciara Milton tried another couple of shots but they were both blocked by Mayo defenders.

Carlow went on the attack and won a corner – taken by Ciara Milton and the cross was met by the head of Emma Louise Malone, but it went over the bar from 6 yards.

Mayo’s Ciara Kearney went on a run and put in a good cross but Carlow’s Carla Byrne easily caught the cross.

In the 14th minute a through ball by Ashlee Smith found Ciara Milton and she slotted the ball into the corner of the net to equalise at 1 – 1.

Another good run by Ashlee Smith won another corner and it was cleared by the Mayo defence.

A run by Siofra McGuiness into Carlow’s penalty area enabled her to get off a shot, however, Carlow’s Anna Gurthy headed the ball over the bar, thus saving a certain goal and the resulting corner was cleared.

Carlow were starting to put strong pressure on Mayo, with Ashlee Smith, Emma Malone and Ciara Milton all prominent.

As half-time approached, Ciara Kearney got through Carlow’s defence and shot just over the bar and the 1-1 scoreline was a fair reflection on the game overall.

Second Half.

A good run and cross by Ciara Milton saw Carlow’s Natakia Deka’s flick the ball into the net, but the ball had gone out and the score was disallowed.

Carlow kept piling on the pressure and from another Milton corner on 35 minutes – Keelie Doyle met it with a brilliant header that flew into the net to make the score 1 – 2.

Then on 38 minutes Siobhan Sinnott threaded a ball through to the irrepressible Ciara Milton and she slotted the ball into the corner of the net to make the score 1 – 3 and score her brace.

Siobhan Sinnott and the petite Laura Malone combined and won a corner – taken by Siobhan Sinnott and the ball bobbled around in the Mayo area, before finally being cleared.

Mayo stepped up their pressure and they won a couple of corners but nothing came of them.

Natalia Deka got a pass to Siobhan Sinnott who lifted her shot into the roof of the net to make the score 1 – 4 on 61 minutes, with Carlow coasting.

As full-time approached, Mayo won a corner and Grace Carroll took it and found Riona Moynihan headed it home to make the score 2 – 4 and just after the whistle went and Carlow had topped their Group with 3 wins and 9 points.

Best for Mayo were Ciara Kearney, Riona Moynihan, Siofra McGuinness and Niamh Curran, whilst standing out for Carlow were Ciara Milton, Lucie O’Reilly, Ashlee Smith and Cara English.

Match 4 – The Gaynor Cup 2023 – Quarter Final.

Report by Bob Howson.

Galway 1 – 1 Carlow at Full Time – Carlow won 4 – 3 on Penalties.

First Half.

On an overcast day, with a stiffish breeze, Galway met Carlow in the Quarter Final of the Gaynor Cup, which was being screened on live TV, for all those supporters who couldn’t make it to the actual game.

Galway were first on the attack, when a long ball went through the middle of Carlow’s defence, but Carla Byrne was quickly off her line to collect the ball and she then cleared.

Carlow started to put some pressure on Galway when Ciara Milton played in Eimear Bolger, but the ball went out of play for a throw to Galway.

Galway won a free kick which was taken by Holly Gallagher and she played it to Anna McGough who embarked on a good run, but she was crowded out.

Carlow won a free kick 40 yards out that was taken by Ciara Milton and which resulted in a corner but nothing came of it.

Carlow were taking the game to Galway and Carlow won another free kick out on the left taken by Ciara Milton – Carlow’s freekick specialist and she shot on target from 40 yards, which saw Dorina Todosi mishandle the ball, but she was awarded a controversial free kick.

Another good run by Carlow’s Ashlee Smith saw her cross collected by Doruna Todosi and cleared.

Another free kick was won by Holly Gallagher on halfway but she put straight into Carla Byrne’s hnds and she cleared.

Another cross by Ashlee Smith hit Emma Dillon in the face and rebounded to Jasmine Doyle who shot over the bar.

Galway’s Holly Gallagher was having an excellent game in Galway’s defence and she thwarted Carlow’s attackers on numerous occasions.

As half time approached Galway’s Abi Gilligan passed to Holly O’Leary who shot over the bar and that was the last action in a pulsating first half.

Half Time 0 - 0

Second Half.

Holly Gallagher played another good ball into Holly O’Leary who won a corner taken by Abi Gilligan but it went out for a goal kick.

There was some fine defensive play by Jasmine Tracey and she played in a good ball into Carlow’s penalty area and only partially cleared and Abbie Duffy shot over Carla Byrne from 25 yards on 33 minutes and into the net to give Galway a vital 1 – 0 lead.

Carlow won another corner but it was overhit and and Ciara Milton took it and the ball went out on the far side of the pitch.

Carlow won another corner again taken by Ciara Milton and the ball bobbled about in a forest of legs in the six yard box, before Siobhan Sinnott toe-poked the ball into the net to equalise at 1 – 1 on 36 minutes, which was fully deserved as Carlow had had the bulk of the play.

A through ball was sent through to Jasmine Doyle but Darina Todosi – Galway’s keeper was out quickly to collect the ball which was slightly overhit.

Carlow were still pressing but Galway were defending well and then Galway got a free kick which was taken by Anna Conway and Holly O’Leary got on the end of it, but lifted it well over the bar.

At this stage it was ‘Battle Royale’ in midfield, as both teams were endeavouring to grab another goal, which would be vital as full time approached .

Ashlee Smith went on another brilliant run, but her cross was saved by Darina Todosi and cleared.

Galway were pressing but Carlow were defending as if their lives were depending on it and it was here that the Referee blew for full time with a 1-1 scoreline and it was straight into a penalty shoot-out.

Galway took the first penalty and scored and Ciara Milton then scored for Carlow, Galway missed their second penalty and Ashlee Smith scored for Carlow to put them one up, Galway scored their third and so did Siobhan Sinnott, Galway then scored their fourth and Carlow missed theirs to even the scores at 3 -3.

Galway missed their fifth and it was down to Cara English to put Carlow through to the Semi – Final and to everyone’s delight she did that and joy was unconfined amongst everybody from Carlow.

End of Report.

Match 5 – The Gaynor Cup 2023 Semi – Final.

Report by Bob Howson.

Carlow 1 – 1 MGL South at FT – Carlow won 5 – 3 on Penalties.

This was another fine , sunny afternoon, with just a slight breeze for this semi-final between Carlow and MGL South.

First Half.

Carlow started off by putting MGL under early pressure when a long ball out of Carlow’s defence found Siobhan Sinnott and she shot just wide a defender and shot low into the bottom corner past MGL clearance and stole the ball and out-paced 3 minutes.

Once again Carlow’s dynamic duo of Ashlee Smith and Ciara Milton worked together and Ciara shot wide from all of 30 yards.

MGL won a corner and Grace Moore took the kick but she overhit the ball and it went out for a throw on the opposite side.

Ciara Milton blocked an attempted clearance by the MGL defence and she out-paced a defender and shot low and hard into the bottom corner of the net, beyond Kate Scully – Maher – MGL’s keeper to put Carlow into the lead with a 1-0 scoreline.

Following a mis-kick by Carlow’s Aoife Bergin – MGL’s Robyn Loughran got on to the ball and shot but Carla Byrne pulled off a fine save to deny her.

MGL’s Niamh Niland picked up loose ball at the edge of Carlow’s penalty area and she shot but it went wide.

Carlow were coming under some pressure, however, ther was some great work by Hanna Kerfah in covering her colleagues in defence and MGL were foundering on her efforts.

MGL won a free kick which was taken by Lara Dallaghan 35 yards out, but she overhit it and it was a goal-kick to Carlow.

Just before half-time there was a spell of good interplay between Laura Malone, Ciara Milton and Lucie O’Reilly, but their move came to nought.

Half – Time came with Carlow still leading 1 - 0 by their single early goal.

Second Half.

Carla Byrne had to be quick to come out of her goal to catch a through ball out of the MGL half and she then cleared her lines.

Ashlee Smith went on yet another fine run, but she was stopped in her tracks by Ella Grace-Cummin.

A good run and cross by Ciara Killeen was caught by Carla Byrne who cleared the ball down the field.

MGL were fighting hard to try and get back into the game by putting pressure on Carlow, but Carlow were defending stoutly and and generally ‘bossing the game’.

There was some good defensive work by Cara English and she was ably assisted by Lucie O’Reilly, Aoife Bergin and Hanna Kerfah,

A shot by Ciara Killeen was initially fumbled by Carla Byrne, but she managed to recover the loose ball and then cleared her lines.

Then it was disaster for Carlow – a through ball was mis-kicked and Robyn Loughran only had to shoot into an empty net to equalise on 44 minutes – so it was 1-1 with little time to go and everything to play for.

Cara English was playing her heart out and making saving tackles all over the place and that was inspiring her team- mates who all upped their game.

Carlow were awarded a free kick just outside the MGL penalty area and Ciara Milton took it and it went just over the bar.

There was more strong defensive work by Cara English and Keelie Doyle that kept MGL at bay,

Carlow were throwing everything at MGL in an effort to get a goal, so they didn’t have to go to the dreaded penalty shoot – out.

It was end to end stuff between the two teams and nobody could take their eyes of this thrilling game, in case you missed a key part of play.

The final whistle went and it was straight into Carlow’s second Penalty Shoot Out.

Carlow were up first and Ciara Milton scored and MGL also scored, Ashlee Smith scored the second and MGL missed theirs, Keelie Doyle scored hers and MGL scored their’s to make it 3 – 2 to Carlow.

Siobhan Sinnott scored her’s and MGL scored their’s ro make it 4 -3 and Eimear Bolger scored her’s to make it 5 – 3 and that meant that MGL couldn’t get level so their last penalty wasn’t taken and Carlow won the game and progressed to the Final for the very first time ever.

Again joy was unconfined and the whole squad celebrated, together with Coaches, League Officials, Parents, Siblings and Supporters, with Carlow erupting into their battle cry song ‘Carlow’s on Fire’ which was sung long and loud.

Carlow received many congratulations from other Squads and Facebook was full of tweets with good wishes to the Girls and there was only the Final itself to negotiate for Carlow to be in Dreamland.

End of Report

Midlands came out and upped their game but Carlow were defending stoutly, with every player giving it their all.

Midlands won a corner but it was cleared by Carlow and after a fabulous run by Ciara Milton – her cross was palmed out by Kate Scully Maher.

Some good defending by Anna Gurny helped relieve some pressure by Midlands and soon after the Referee blew for full time with a 0 -0 scoreline and into 10 minutes each way extra time.

First Period.

Ruby Boland brought down Ciara Milton some 30 yards out and she fired in a shot that hit the bar and went out and just after the Referee blew his whistle.

Midlands took the first penalty and scored and so did Ciara Milton for 1-1, Midlands scored their second and so did Ashlee Smith for 2-2.

Midlands scored their third and Keelie Doyle scored for Carlow to make the score 3 -3.

Midlands scored their fourth and Siobhan Sinnott scored her’s to make it 4 -4.

Midlands scored their fifth and Eimear Bolger scored her’s to make it 5 -5 and it was into sudden death – where Midlands missed and it was then to Cara English who did the necessary and the Cup was Carlow’s for the first time ever and once again the Crowd and all the players and League Officials/Coaches invaded the pitch and the jubilations lasted for a long time, before they went to collect the Cup.

Ciara Milton shared the Top Scorer Trophy with Eva Loftus of Limerick District with eight goals each.

Jasmine Doyle was declared Best Player in the tournament as selected by the Squad’s Coaches – Alan Smith, Paul Sinnott and Ger Osborne and she had been absolutely stunning and fully deserved the accolade.

At the end of the match everybody joined in with the Girls and there was quite a lot of tears but they were tears of joy not of despair.

Refreshments and some presentations were held in The Talbot Hotel which were enjoyed by all who attended.
