SUCCESS FIRES UP MAYNOOTH FOR PREMIER TITLE IN ATHLONE

A BRILLIANT individual goal by Success Edogun earned Maynooth University the Colleges and Universities Premier League trophy in a tightly contested showdown at Athlone Town Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The Treaty United striker showed good strength to force his way into the penalty area from the left wing in the 72nd minute and with his back to goal shook off the attentions of Kilonda and Hampson to pivot and fire low past Alex Moody in the SETU goal.

It was just reward for the north Kildare university who had been the more creative of the two sides on the day and Callum Warfield, Aaron Doran and Edogun had created openings over the course of the game but last ditch defending by the Carlow college somehow managed to keep their goal intact.

Anto Dolan showed up well for SETU in the middle of the park but Maynooth's tough tackling Sultan Adenekan broke up many of the Carlow side's forays into the opposition half with Minogue rarely threatened in the Maynooth goal.

As the rain began to fall in the second period challenges became a little feisty but the game never got out of control with both sides continually probing for openings.

It looked as if one goal would decide the destination of the Premier cup crown and so it proved when Edogun produced a sublime individual cameo to finally crack the SETU resistance.

SETU pushed for an equaliser and threatened off set pieces but this was Maynooth's day and Sultan Adenkan was a worthy recipient of the Man of the Match award while the honour of lifting the cup fell to captain Dean O'Shea who was presented with the trophy by Ray O'Malley CUFL Chairman.
