Under 16 League 2022/23

St Patrick’s Boys AFC Red    5,     v Ballymurphy Celtic AFC    2,

Saturday 21 January 2023      The Meadows Graiguecullen (St Pats Boys)

Both teams started well in conditions ideal for football, little to no wind and a break from the cold and rain. St Pats however started to impose themselves onto the opposition and forced two good early saves from the Ballymurphy goalkeeper.

The opening goal duly arrived on 15 mins, good intricate play in the central area with a final ball to Bobby Jordan who made no mistake from 18 yards, giving the goalkeeper no chance, with a rifled shot low into the bottom corner. The home side pressed on and created some more opportunities but were in the main thwarted by very good goalkeeping.

However, on 21mins St Pats got their second of the game, this time Brian Ferreira Dos Santos beat two men with flair and skill and had the composure to dispatch a shot high to the keeper’s right hand side.  Ballymurphy, to their credit, did not let their heads go down and pulled a goal back through Jack Joyce when put through 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper and making no mistake.

That goal brought an almost instant response from St Pats, and more good play, this time in the wide area and a ball driven across goals was finished expertly by Brian Ferreira Dos Santos for his second of the game and a half time score of 3-1 to the home side.

The second half followed in the same way as that of the first with the home side in the ascendancy once again. Plenty of opportunities where being created once again, however the Ballymurphy goalkeeper, to his credit, was in inspiring form pulling off a number of quality saves. However on 51mins, St Pats got their fourth goal of the game and what a goal it was.

Philip Nykiel finding a little space in the midfield area and rifling a shot from 25 yards that looped into the top corner. Ballymurphy though ploughed on and were rewarded with the final score of the game with a consolation strike by Dylan Doyle. A good win for the home side and a battling performance by the away side with a fair result in the end.

Best on the day for St Pats where, Brian Ferreira Dos Santos, Conor Dunne and Bobby Jordan.

Best for Ballymurphy where Ciaran O’Neill, Dylan Doyle and Jack Joyce.

Hanover Harps AFC     5,     v St Patrick’s Boys AFC Green   0,

Saturday 21 January 2023      The Plots (Hanover Harps)

The final scoreline doesn't tell the full story of a good battle between Hanover and St Pat's Green in The Plots on Saturday afternoon.

The visiting keeper made an excellent save in the first minute and that set the tone for the first half as Hanover struggled to make the breakthrough while Pat's were dangerous on the break. When the home team did breach the defensive line they were denied by the woodwork on a couple of occasions. Just on half time Sean Hayden put the home team in front, getting the final touch on a Bailee Cooney corner. Half-time score 1-0 to Hanover.

The second half began in the same manner and it took until after the hour to double the lead with a surging run and finish from Aaron Cunningham Burke. Pats were always in the game and the next goal was to prove crucial. Dermot Lawlor got it for Hanover, arriving at the back post to finish a good team move. The home team pushed on in the last 15 minutes and Ross Moran scored a terrific volley before Aaron Cunningham Burke made it 5-0 from the penalty spot. A hard-fought win for Hanover with a final score of 5-0.

Best for Hanover were Dara Nolan, Darragh Redmond, Eoin Ryan and Lander Fernandez.

A good team effort for St Pat's particularly their keeper.

St Anne's welcomed Hanover this morning in what we knew was going to be a tight match. Both teams were evenly matched. Hanover came out the better side in the first half, it took Anne's a good while to settle on the ball and once they did they started to create a few chances which brought the best out of Hanover's keeper who carried out some great saves.

Burrin Celtic AFC    2,     v St Fiaccs AFC   1,

Saturday 21 January 2023      The Valley Ballon (Burrin Celtic)

A contender for game of the season in Ballon this morning saw two outstanding teams playing to a very high level. The first half was a tight affair with chances few and far between as the midfield battle between Burrin’s Una McFarland and Fiaccs Hannah Kerfah was a joy to watch, then a great chance falling to Fiacc’s Ashlee Smith but Abby Keppel in the Burrin goal made an outstanding save to keep the score nil/nil at half time.

The second half saw Burrin start strong with Eimear Bolger leading the line and her hold up play caused problems for the Fiaccs defence.  Midway through the half the ball fell to Lucy Kinsella on the edge of the 18 yard box, she took the ball on her right foot on to her left and drilled the ball into the goal to give Burrin a well-deserved 1-0 lead.

Fiaccs showed their fighting spirit and came back strongly with Ali O Connor showing her quality and their play saw a ball over the top and Hannah Kerfah hit a looping shot over the on rushing keeper to make it 1-1. Kate Kearns was marshalling her defence brilliantly for Burrin and Anna Cullen fighting for every ball for Burrin to get back into the lead.

With ten minutes left Eimear Bolger and Lucy Kinsella combined to feed Keelie Doyle and she raced through to make it 2-1 to Burrin. A few minutes later another Burrin break saw Sophia Slattery just shoot wide after some great play around the Fiacc’s box. Final score Burrin Celtic 2-1 St Fiaccs.

A great game played by both sides and well refereed by Artur Bienko and everyone supporting saw the level of girls soccer in Carlow is at a very high level.

Nurney Villa AFC    4,     v Killeshin AFC  5,

Saturday 21 January 2023      Augha Road Nurney

The away side opened the scoring before an Ide Nolan goal saw Nurney equalise within minutes. The remainder of the first half was an even affair, with Nurney failing to trouble the Killeshin goalie despite having parity in midfield, whilst the visitors had more luck and managed to find the net 3 more times to see them leading by 4 goals to 1 at the break.

The second half saw Nurney take command and Natalia Deka scored a brace to see Nurney bring the margin down to the minimum.

Killeshin scored their fifth and seemed to be safe but Natalia once again found the net for her hat trick to leave Killeshin nervous for the final few minutes with Nurney pressing for a goal that would give them a share of the points.

The away defence held firm however and a very enjoyable game saw Killeshin take all three points.

Apart from their goalscorers, best for Nurney in a battling performance were Natasha Byrne, Elisa Nolan and Alice Carroll.
