Roscommon and District League
The third round of the FAI Junior Cup took centre stage on Sunday but overall it was a poor day for the Roscommon and District League teams.
Premier side St Johns Athletic took on the Sligo Super League side Strand Celtic at Lecarrow and eventually lost on a 3 – 0 score line.
Somewhat against the run of play the Sligo side were 1 – 0 ahead after thirty minutes and added two more after the break.
Ballinasloe Town faced old rivals Castlebar Celtic at Ballinasloe. The home side pulled off a good win against the Castlebar side when they last played at this venue but it was the Talented Castlebar Celtic side who go through to Round four following a 2 – 0 win on Sunday.
The home side missed a good chance after six minutes of play. The winners scored their first by way of a deflection midway through the first half and added a second with less than a minute played in the second half.
In the Premier Division of the Roscommon and District League just one point separated the top four of Castlerea Celtic Boyle Celtic St Johns Athletic and C P Ajax.
The Castleplunket side C P Ajax had an impressive 2 – 1 win over a good Moylough 79 side at Tarmon. In a real battle between two evenly matched sides the home side held out to take all three points
Damien Boyle broke the deadlock after thirty five minutes of play with his ninth league goal of the season and Evan Flynn added a second two minutes into the second half for the Castleplunket side. Michael Mulligan pulled one back for Moylough with two minutes left to play but it came too late for the losers.
Title holders Boyle Celtic are a point behind the leaders Castlerea Celtic but have a game less played. They beat Ballaghaderreen 2 – 1 at Boyle. Shane Battles gave Boyle Celtic a 1 – 0 half time lead but Shairoze Akram levelled the game midway through the second half. Michael Corrigan scored his seventh league goal of the season near the end to take all three points for Boyle Celtic.
Castlerea Celtic received the three points from their game against Skyvalley Rovers.
In Division 2 St Cuans /Ahascragh United continue to lead this Division following a hard earned 2 – 0 win over nearest challengers Rahara Rovers at Ahascragh. The sides were level for most of the game but in the last few minutes Nathan Horan and Liam O Connor scored for St Cuans / Ahascragh United.
Glen Celtic are still very much in the Division 2 title race following a 2 – 0 win over Skyvalley Rovers at Onagh Park Taughmaconnell. In a close game Mac Dara Geraghty opened the scoring for the Glenamaddy side early in the game. The home side missed a penalty kick and this was to prove costly. Ryan Mc Hugh made sure of the three points when he scored a second for the Glenamaddy side.
With Women’s League leaders Cam Celtic not playing the teams nearest had the chance of closing the gap.
Kilkerrin United share second place with Boyle following their 4 – 0 win over Ballaghaderreen at Kilkerrin
Samantha Fahy scored three and a super header from Sarah Ward made up the winners total
Boyle Celtic travelled to Castlerea Celtic and won 2 – 0. A mistake in the home defence after twenty five minutes of play allowed the alert Katie Walsh to score for Boyle Celtic.
With fifteen played in the second half good play by Aine Brennan on the left wing created a chance for Rachel Gormley who came within inches of levelling the game. With the home side looking for an equaliser Anna Mc Grath scored with a fine volley to give Boyle Celtic a 2 – 0 lead which they defended well until the end of the game.
Colemanstown beat Ballinasloe Town 1- 0 at Colemanstown. Rachel O Brien scored the only goal of the game with ten played and the Colemanstown keeper was kept busy for the remainder of the half. The winners could afford to miss a penalty kick near the end when Claire Keane was fouled.
Shiven Rovers were comfortable 6 – 1 winners over St Cuans Ahascragh United at Newbridge. Ciara Collins scored in the second minute and Lucy Dunnican added two more and Rachel Farrell one before half time. Giany Pricilla pulled one back for the losers before Sinead Flynn and Ciara Lally added two more for the winners near the end.
