Burrin Celtic AFC     0,   Vale Wnderers  AFC   2,

Monday 03 April 2023  The Valley Ballon (Burrin Celtic)

Burrin welcomed Vale to the Valley for a very entertaining game. Both teams started at a steady pace with some lovely football played. Burrin had some great chances at goal but Vale’s keeper Amy Farrell was on hand with some great saves.

Both teams were putting in great work but it was Vale who got the break through on the right when Sarah Divine made a shot at goal and the Burrin keeper had no chance. Burrin came back fighting and kept Vale at bay for the rest of the 1st half which ended Burrin 0-1 Vale.

In the second half Burrin dominated most of the play and put Vale under pressure with some great passing from India Mernagh sending Leah Fitzpatrick on some great run’s beating the Vale’s backline with some great chances on goal but Vale’s Amy Farrell made some great saves.

Mia Nolan was lively up front and kept the Vale back line busy. Eimear Nolan in the Burrin back line was outstanding tonight and Vale found it hard to break through. Burrin had  5 u14 girls helping out tonight and each of them played outstanding football.

The last few minutes of the game Vale got that lucky break when Kate Burke got on the ball and slotted it home for the game to finish 2-0 to Vale. The score does not reflect on the game Burrin were just unlucky not to score.

Best for Burrin was a good whole team performance.

Best for Vale Sarah Devine, Amy Farrell, Alice Hickey and Chloe Lawlor.

Bagenalstown AFC     3,   St Patrick’s Boys  AFC   6,

Tuesday 04 April 2023  McGrath Park, Bagenalstown

Bagenalstown welcomed St Pat's to the McGrath Park this evening. This promised to be an exciting game with Pat's looking to secure the league playing second place Bagenalstown who were on a good winning run and it didn't disappoint.

Bagenalstown got off to the worst of starts and went a goal down when failing to clear a ball that found Mark Buggy at the back post to tap in.  The town couldn't seem to get hold of Pat's in midfield as they dominanted the early possession. Some sloppy defending again gave the ball away in a dangerous area, the ball broke to Waraith Oyeniyi who from about 25 yards stuck his shot well and found the top corner for a 2 -0 lead to Pat's.

The away side kept applying the pressure and eventually Bagenalstown conceded again, Kacper Zarzycki getting his first. The Town were rattled  and from then on they seemed to up their game and started passing with a bit of confidence and nearly got rewarded when Jake McAssey got free down the left but couldn't beat the Pat's keeper who was brave in diving in at the feet of the Bagenalstown man.

Moments later The Town hit the post from a Lillis header. Just as they started to get into the game a cross sent in to the back post found Kacper Zarzyki unmarked and he grabbed his second. Half-time score was 4-0 to Pat's.

Bagenalstown regrouped at halftime and were a much better team in the second half and got rewarded when James Brennan made one of his many runs and was brought down in the box. Jake McAssey converted the penalty. Soon after Pat's were down to 10 men when their goalie received a red card and it looked like Bagenalstown would find a way back into it as they came at Pat's hard but is was the 10 men who got the next goal with Kacper Zarzycki completing his hattrick.

Bagenalstown won a free kick and Jake McAssey’s shot was too much for the keeper who couldn't hold it and James Brennan was the first to react to make the score 5-2.  Bagenalstown kept coming though and Jake McAssey made a good run down the left and coolly tapped it over the keeper and tucked it into the corner of the net for 5-3.

With the game in the closing stages now and both sets of supporters were getting anxious. Bagenalstown kept looking for more goals but couldn't find any and then they gave away a needless free kick and Mark Buggy managed to find the left corner to score the final goal for a 6 -3 win to St Pats.

Bagenalstown made a bad start but they showed real character In the second half.

Pat's were worthy winners on the night and worthy winners of the league this season. Well done to them and the best of luck in the semifinals of the sfai trophy.

St Annes AFC     2,   St Patrick’s Boys  AFC   1,

Tuesday 04 April 2023  Ballylinan (St Anne’s)

St Annes met St Pats tonight for the second time this season. Annes started well and piled on the pressure to see some great chances saved or just go astray. St Pats started to get into the game and put St Annes defence under pressure and had the St Annes keeper made some great saves. Half time came and the two teams were equal on chances but both teams failed to score and the first half finished 0 0.

The second half saw both sides battle hard with some great soccer played but it was St Pats to score first with some great passing play. Annes rallied and saw a goal come from Roan Brennan to bring it level.

The game was anyone’s at this stage and both teams tried so hard but it was St Annes who hit the back of the net again. Annes defence held strong and St Pats pushed hard for the equaliser. Overall, a fantastic game of soccer from both sides.

All the St Pats players played well.

St Annes team was outstanding from start to finish.

New Oak Boys AFC     0,   St Anne’s  AFC   0,

Tuesday 04 April 2023  Burrin Road, Carlow (New Oak Boys)

New Oak hosted St Anne’s this evening, a fixture that is always very close and tonight was no different. St Anne’s started the better with Myles Nelligan linking up well with his team mates down the right where he got a couple of crosses in, which fortunately for New Oak were well held by Kieran Holbrook.

After a great strike from Nelligan that was destined for the top corner but for Holbrook’s fine save the home side’s defence repelled much of what St Anne’s threw at them in the early exchanges. This led to New Oak growing into the game.

On 17 minutes great play from Evan Glynn set Calum Quiqley in on goal but a great recovery from the St Anne’s defender meant Quiqley couldn’t get his shot away cleanly. Half time score was 0-0.

The second half was much the same with both defences on top and both keeper’s commanding their area. Both teams had efforts that were well hit but in turn well held by both keepers. After a free kick that went just over from St Anne’s the last 10 minutes saw New Oak have 2 good efforts to take all 3 points. Firstly a fine solo run by Hugh Collins set up Fionn Brophy but he couldn’t get the ball out from under his feet on the sticky pitch to get a clean strike.

Then Joshua Crosby teed up Myk from an indirect free kick which Myk hit extremely well but again the Anne’s keeper showed great hands. This was an entraining 0-0 match where a draw was a fair result with both teams having chances to nick the win.

Best for New Oak: Michael Myk, Hugh Collins and Luana Whelan.

Best for St Anne’s: Cillian Dobban, Mark Hickey and Teo Lynsky.

Parkville United AFC     0,   St Anne’s AFC   4

Wednesday 05 April 2023  Hawkins Lane, Tullow (Parkville United)

Parkville hosted St Annes on Wednesday evening in what proved to be a good 3pts for St Annes in their quest for the league title. It was Parkville though who started the stronger side creating chances with some good through balls by Tadhg Nolan and Phoenix Mullins to set up Tawana who couldn't find the net.

With 10-15 minutes gone Parkville found themselves a man down after a late challenge. Parkville didn't let this dampen their spirits and within minutes were awarded a penalty but which they unfortunately missed. From then on St Annes controlled the game and opened the scoring with an outstanding goal from outside the box into the top corner by Roan Brennan. Half time Parkville 0-1 St Annes.

As the 2nd half began it was all St Annes and they were rewarded again with a goal  when a pass went through the middle and was topped off with a neat finish by Colm Lynch. St Annes added two more goals by Cian Murphy and Thomas Foy and proved to be the better side on the day and could be worthy winners of the league come the end of the season. Full time score was Parkville 0-4 St Annes.

Best players for Parkville on the day were Phoenix Mullins. Tawana Mudawapi and Tadgh Nolan.

Ballymurphy Celtic AFC     1,   Hanover Harps AFC   3,

Wednesday 05 April 2023  Ballymurphy

Despite all the rain the Ballymurphy pitch was in great condition for this meeting of Ballymurphy and Hanover. These two teams were well matched in a good physical game of football.

Both teams contested every ball and neither was able to get a foothold in the game. This changed after 17mins when a defender was very harshly punished for a handball and Hanover awarded a penalty, Adrian Robu’s well struck penalty gave the keeper little chance even though he got a hand to it, Bally pushed for an equaliser but were caught out when following a scramble the ball fell to Andrian Robu and he finished well from 6yards out.

Bally then had a free kick from 25 yards out which fizzed over the crossbar with the keeper beaten and went even closer two mins later when Dian Foleys effort from 8 yards out hit a defender and rolled wide of the goal. Halftime Ballymurphy 0-2 Hanover.

The second half started with Bally pressing hard but Hanover looking dangerous on the break, from one of these breaks Hanover scored their third following a defensive error with allowed Owen Fitzharris to plant a header firmly to the net from 7yards out in the 47th min.

Ballymurphy never gave up and in a similar incident to the handball in the first half could have had a penalty of their own. Shane Jordan’s header from 10yards out from James Floods corner looked to be heading in but hit a defender on the head and then James Flood finally got the goal Bally deserved with a shot from 20yards out, Hanover had the final say when Senan Sheehan ran half the pitch and looked certain to score but Jack Ivers made a great save and Cian Moylan who had made up 30 yards was able to clear from two yards out. Final score Ballymurphy 1-3 Hanover.

A good game of football with Mael O’Rock, Senan Sheehan and Bobby Mulhearne for the visitors.

It was a great evening for the game as the sun came down on the Super Bowl. It was a tense start from both teams as they struggled to create early chances. Soon after Vale made it 2-0 with a long range effort from Ethan Chambers looped in over the Ballymurphy keeper. An understrength Bagenalstown team welcomed St Joseph's to the McGrath Park on Saturday morning for an early kick off. Joeys started well and looked most likely but some good defending by Jack Monahan and Aidan Hickey kept them at bay.

Town started to grow into the game by now with the middle trio of Lillis, Power and Brennan starting to pull the strings and beginning to open things up but to no avail as half time came with the score 0-0.

Second half and town continued where they left off playing good football and beginning to make chances. Their play got the reward it deserved halfway through the half when John Lillis got the final touch to a great Dan Collins corner.

Baltinglass Town AFC     5,  Parkville United  AFC   1,

Saturday 08 April 2023  Parkmore Baltinglass

The much-anticipated fixture kicked off in Parkmore. Baltinglass started the stronger and only 4 minutes in through a run from Charlie Doyle who was dragged down in the box, Josh Furlong stepped up to take the penalty and slotted it home.

Charlie Doyle was involved again 2 minutes later when he assisted Padraig Byrne for a tap in that hit off a defender and went into the net to make it 2-0. Ten minutes in Josh Furlong found Charlie Doyle once more where he slotted one home. Sixteen minutes in winger Lee Smith found the striker again who finished calmly again to make it Baltinglass 4-0, and his 2nd goal. at half-time.

Baltinglass entered the second half ready for more and a battling Parkville gave them a competitive second half, the game was a good battle with Baltinglass hitting home again when Josh Furlong found Charlie Doyle again to give him his 3rd and a 5-0 lead for Baltinglass.

Vale Wanderers AFC     0,  Killeshin  AFC   2,

Saturday 08 April 2023  Superbowl, Leighlinbridge (Vale Wanderers)

The final match of the Division 1 league campaign for Vale saw Killeshin travel to the Superbowl and having shared the points in a 0-0 draw when the sides met previously, both sides would have approached this fixture optimistically.

Killeshin came out of the traps flying and almost took the lead in the opening exchanges, but as play settled down and the game became a bit more end to end, the home side came more and more into the game.

But it was Killeshin who followed up on their good start, leading 0-1 at half-time following a shot from distance, through a busy penalty area which made it difficult for the keeper to keep his eyes on it, and the bounce deceived him.

Shaun Sibanda's industriousness created an opening which he struck with his left foot and was saved. Scores were Vale 0-1 Killeshin at H/T.

The second half saw the home team up their game with Alan Lawlor and Sibanda causing problems for Killeshin without managing to pull Vale level.

Killeshin were still threatening and their goalkeeper's kickouts turned defence into attack every time he got the ball in his hands, but Joey Drea & James Aughney in goal marshalled the Vale defence well and Brendan Byrne, Òdhran Noctor and Adam Walsh were finding their groove, winning tackles and trying to find their attackers with probing through-balls.

Diarmuid Redmond and Sibanda both forcing Killeshin's No.1 into decent saves. And so it was all the more frustrating when a second goal was conceded through a well struck indirect free-kick which was awarded for Aughney picking up a ball that came off  Drea's shin but deemed an intentional back-pass.

Vale showed great heart to keep going and created the best of the openings in the remaining minutes - but the game was beyond them. Final score Vale 0-2 Killeshin.

Best for Vale were Adam Walsh, Ódhran Noctor & Alan Lawlor.

Killeshin Goal-Scorers: Alex Murphy, Max Denn,

Best for Killeshin were: Milo Doran, Troy Farrell & Flynn Brennan.

Ballymurphy Celtic AFC     0,  New Oak Boys  AFC   1,

Saturday 08 April 2023  Ballymurphy

On a fine afternoon for football New Oak beat a very depleted Ballymurphy side who were missing a host of players and had to resort to using two young players from there U12 division three side to make up the starting eleven. Ballymurphy defended like their lives were on the line and their defence and midfield repelled attack after attack from New Oak who pressed hard but created little worthwhile chances.

They had a goal rightly disallowed for offside after 20 mins and Cormac Lowry shot well over from 25 yards out. Cormac Lowry and James Flood were both having a big influence on their respective teams. On 25 mins a brilliant corner by James Flood was just not able to be guided on target from Bobby Ivers.  No scores at half-time.

The second half was similar to the first with Bally defending brilliantly and not giving New Oak any time on the ball. New Oak continued to pour forward and eventually scored the only goal of the game in the 50th min through a fine strike from Siobhán Sinnott into the top corner from 14yards out.

Keenan Brennan then beat a defender on the edge of the box and forced Jack Ivers into a fine save from 10 yards out for the last chance of the game. Full-time score Ballymurphy 0-1 New Oak.

Credit must be given to every Ballymurphy player who really showed great heart and determination with both U12 players Rian Fitzpatrick and Bobby Ivers excelling on their first appearances at this level.

For New Oak Conor Dooley, Siobhán Synott and Oisin Rice were prominent.

Nurney Villa AFC     2,  Ballymurphy Celtic  AFC   1,

Saturday 08 April 2023  Augha Road, Nurney)

This was a lively match played on a good pitch in bright, mild conditions. Nurney started strongly with Orla Byrne making some good runs down the right wing, and Nikola and Natalia Deka threating up front.

However, Siofra McGilligan was very prominent in defence, and helped keep the door closed on Nurney. Rachel Kennedy was offering a threat up front for Ballymurphy, particularly on counter attacks.

Nurney continued pressing, and Mai Cradock put in some excellent corners that caused trouble in the Ballymurphy box, that nearly resulted in a deflected goal from a Roisin Murphy shot.

Mia O’Neill and Ava O’Dwyer were defending excellently. Then from a long clearance, Rachel Kennedy got in on Nurney’s goal, but struck the underside of the cross bar. Nil-nil at half-time.

Just 5 minutes into the second half Rachel Kennedy struck. A long low pass from the Ballymurphy half released her down the middle, and she kept her calm to fire a low shot into the corner to put Ballymurphy one-nil up.

Nurney, who had been in the ascendancy, were shocked, but pushed hard. Mai Cradock had a magnificent shot from a tight angle hit the post, and Nurney started flinging everything they could at Ballymurphy.

A lovely one-two between Natalia Deka and Holly Murphy nearly led to a score. With 10 mins to go, good work from Roisin Murphy put the Ballymurphy goalkeeper under pressure, and Natalia Deka took advantage to slot the ball into the net for 1-1.

Nurney continued pushing, and a fantastic diagonal pass from Holly Ryan got Nikola Deka through on the right hand side, but the Ballymurphy goalkeeper was out very quick to make an impressive block save. Shortly after, Rachel Kennedy nearly got in to score for Ballymurphy.

With 3 minutes to go, Nurney won a corner on the left-hand side, which Mai Cradock whipped into the box, which Roisin Murphy got a touch on, for Doireann O’Toole to fire into the net to win the game for Nurney on a final score of Nurney 2-1 Ballymurphy.

A great game, with a superb effort by both sets of players.
