Five star Hanover sink Saints with superb display
Under 16 cup 2023
Hanover Harps AFC 5, St Joseph’s AFC Black 0
Sunday 14 May 2023 The Plots (Hanover Harps)
Hanover qualified for the Under 16 Cup Final after winning the semifinal v St Joseph’s Black
on Sunday morning in The Plots.
The home team were slow out of the blocks and St Joseph’s
asked plenty of questions before Hanover’s Daire Byrne opened the scoring after 15 minutes.
It looked like staying that way until the break until a great individual goal from Aaron
Cunningham Burke made it 2-0 at half time.
Hanover improved a bit in the second half but Joseph's were still in the game until Bailee
Cooney struck a free kick home off the underside of the crossbar.
There was still time for
Aaron Cunningham Burke to complete his hat trick with two more well taken goals. Final
score Hanover 5-0 St Josephs.
For Hanover, Dermot Lawlor, Darragh Redmond, Lander Fernandes and Gael O Rock were
in good form.
For Joseph’s, Ronan Kelly, Tommy Cooney and Lorcan Kelly were best.
Under 12 cup 2023 Round 2 to final
Burrin Celtic AFC Div 1 0, Hanover Harps AFC Div 1 3
Tuesday 16 May 2023 The Valley Ballon (Burrin Celtic)
Hanover Div 1 progressed to the Quarterfinals of the U12 Cup 2023 after a 0-3 victory over
hosts Burrin Celtic. The visitors were 0-2 at half time after taking their opportunities when
through on goal. Burrin Celtic needed to push forward to try and close the gap and Hanover
capitalised with a fast break that put the game out of reach.
Hanover March on and while it was a good league and Cup performance for Burrin in 2023
this match marks the end of their season. With the depth of talent on show when these two
impressive teams meet we can look forward to many more competitive matches next season
and beyond.
Under 13 cup round 2 to final 2023
Ballymurphy Celtic 1, Hanover Harps AFC Div 1 2
Thursday 18 May 2023 Ballymurphy
On a fine evening for football and a great surface to play on Ballymurphy and Hanover
locked horns in a titanic battle between two well matched teams. Hanover started brightly
with Adrian Robu prominent for the visitors.
They took the lead from a well delivered corner
that was powered to the net from 7yards by an unmarked Shay O’Grady. Bally upped the
tempo after this and on two occasions Danny Jordan was very unlucky when the bounce of
the ball didn’t go his way, especially the second time with the ball catching him on the back
of his heels ad he raced through on goal.
Bally were then caught out with a sucker punch
before halftime when a ball was played down the left wing and Robu cut inside and finished
well to the far corner in the 25th min. Two mins later the same player cut inside the area from
the left and hit a shot towards the top corner which brought a fantastic save out of the
Ballymurphy keeper.
On the stroke of halftime Bally almost got a goal of their own from a
great James Flood corner, only for the bounce of ball to go against them again.
Ballymurphy came out like a team possessed in the second half and their captain Shane
Jordan drove them on from midfield but in fairness to Hanover they defended very well.
Bally finally got the goal they deserved with 10mins left after Oisin Fogarty showed great
skill and determination to get his cross in and an unfortunate defender headed into his own
net.
Bally were camped in Hanover’s half for the last 10mins but couldn’t force a goal despite
numerous free-kicks and just at the death they missed a great chance for an equaliser when
they shot over the bar from 8yards. Full-time score Ballymurphy 1-2 Hanover.
A great game with Senan Sheehan, Shay O’Grady and Adrian Robu outstanding for Hanover
For Bally, Dylan King, Noah Fitzpatrick and Shane Jordan who covered every blade of grass
in the second half were outstanding in a great team performance.
Under 13 cup round 2 to final 2023
Baltinglass Town AFC 0, Crettyard United AFC 5
Saturday 20 May 2023 Parkmore Baltinglass
Baltinglass were unfortunate in a cup tie in Parkmore. Crettyard started brightly going 1-0 up from a direct cross that ended up in the net.
They weren’t long in grabbing a second to add to their lead. A long battle ensued in midfield with both teams having chances but no luck for either.
Halftime came with Crettyard having a comfortable lead.
Baltinglass came back out fighting but failed to take advantage of any created chances.
An off day for midfield saw another chance hit the back of the Baltinglass net.
Baltinglass battled hard but a few errors led to a 5 in all total for Crettyard.
A score line that didn’t reflect Baltinglass’ last 20 minutes of possession. An unlucky day for the
young side saw a negative score line at full time.
Final score Baltinglass 0-5 Crettyard.
Best for Baltinglass were: Garreth Doyle, Rian Kennedy, Padraig Byrne and Peter Doyle.
SFAI National Finals.
Reports by Bob Howson.
Yesterday the SFAI held a series of Finals at Evergreen FC’s fine grounds that
were sponsored by SUBWAY – with our U15 Boys taking on West Cork and our
U15 Girls up against Mayo.
There were a number of other Finals taking place concurrently and from the large
crowds that attended – the excitement was palpable, particularly from the Carlow
contingent.
The Boys kicked off first and Carlow took the game to West Cork and it was end
to end stuff, as both teams battled for superiority, but Carlow had the upper hand
and they scored following a good move, when Alan Fleming shot home to give
Carlow a vital 1-0 lead.
It was a very tense time for the Carlow team, as West Cork put them under severe
pressure, but they held on, with John Lillis, being a real colossus, in the centre
back position and ultimately won the day, with that single goal, being enough to
win the Cup, amidst scenes of wild jubilation.
John Lillis was awarded the Man of the Match trophy, which he thoroughly
deserved.
Following on from the Boys match, it was the Girls turn and they met a strong
Mayo side – Carlow started well and took the game to Mayo, who were on the
back foot for some time, but they did come into the game, but Carlow’s back four
led by Emily Kelly, were well able to keep the Mayo attackers at bay.
As half-time approached, Mia Branagan picked up a loose ball in midfield and
from all of 45 yards launched a shot that soared over Mayo’s giant keeper and
nestled in the net for a 1-0 lead and with all the Girls fighting hard to preserve their
slender lead and eventually the final whistle came and Carlow had two National
champions and scenes of unbridled joy were displayed.
Emily Kelly was awarded the Man of the Match trophy, which she thoroughly
deserved.
Carlow & District Juveniles League have for some time been ‘punching above
their weight’ against much larger Counties – but the skills shown and the effort
that was expended by both Boys and Girls was exceptional and augers well for
Carlow Juveniles, as a whole.
