Match of the Week 26/11/22

Referee Artur Bienko.

Hanover Harps AFC 4  -  0  Baltinglass Town AFC

In overcast conditions Hanover Harps entertained Baltinglass with a strong wind blowing straight across the pitch and a distinct threat of rain.

Hanover were the first to show when a long ball out of defence found Sean O’Brien and he crossed but it hit the side netting.

Report by Bob Howson.

A good run and cross by Axel O’Rock went across the six-yard box, but there was no Hanover player on hand to finish, so the chance went abegging.

Shortly after another good run by Axel O’Rock and he crossed into Timmy Adeleye but his shot went well over the bar.

Hanover’s Brian Louw made a great run and cross, which was mishandled by Baltinglass’s keeper – Jack Peter Nolan and eventually the ball was cleared.

There was then a period of scrappy play from both sides which was down to the conditions, which had actually worsened.

Then Hanover got back on song and a terrific run by Timmy Adeleye beating three defenders but he then shot straight at Jack Peter Nolan who saved easily.

Axel O’Rock  made a good run and cross which rebounded off a Baltinglass defender and was latched on to by Timmy Adeleye and he finished into the corner of the net to break the deadlock on twenty minutes for 1-0 to Hanover.

Baltinglass had a period of pressure and they won a corner, but the wind took hold of the ball and it went over all the players and went out for a throw in on the far side.

Baltinglass’s Wilton O’Leary worked himself into a good position and shot and Hanover’s Peter Breen Parle  pulled off a fine save to deny him.

Axel O’Rock made another great run where he beat two defenders and he crossed in and found Brian Louw and he put a bullet header into the net from six yards out to double the score to 2 – 0 on twenty five minutes.

Just three minutes later Timmy Adeleye capitalised on a loose ball in the six-yard area and after a scramble he tapped home from close range to make the score 3-0 and score his own personal brace.

Brian Louw was having an outstanding game and seemed to be at the heart of everything that was good about Hanover and from 20 yards he shot just wide.

Hanover were dominating play but Baltinglass were working hard and showing their defensive skills and when they had the opportunity they were displaying their attacking skills.

Half-time came with Hanover having a commanding 3 – 0 lead.

Captain Hanover Harps - Sean O'Brien, Ref - Artur Bienko and Captain Baltinglass Town: Sean Byrne

Hanover had the benefit of the slope and the wind in their favour, however, a good run and cross by Baltinglass’s Josh Furlong showed that they hadn’t given up hope of getting back into this game.

A fierce shot by Brain Louw from twenty yards was pushed out for a corner by Jack Peter Nolan and from this it went out for another corner, but nothing came of them.

Hanover’s Sean O’Brien hit a post with a shot from distance with Baltinglass’s Jack Peter Nolan completely beaten.

Baltinglass’s Josh Barry Doyle took a free kick near halfway. however, Hanover’s Keeper - Peter Breen Parle made a fine save under severe pressure.

Hanover won a corner taken by Brian Louw and Alex Mazur rose like an eagle and headed home from close range to make the score 4 – 0.

Baltinglass were still trying hard, however, they couldn’t make any inroads into Hanover’s defence and the game ended with Hanover still in control.

Standing out for Baltinglass were Josh Furlong, Marcus Whittle, Josh Barry Doyle and Daniel Viskers, whilst best for Hanover were Brian Louw, Axel O’Rock, Timmy Adeleye and Sean O’Brien.

Player of the Match was Hanover Harp’s Brian Louw

MAN OF THE MATCH: BRIAN LOUW

New Oak Boys AFC   3,  Bagenalstown AFC  0
Saturday 26 November 2022  Burrin Rd Carlow (New Oak Boys)

A very competitive game in tough conditions down the Burren Road this afternoon between New Oak and Bagnalstown.

The away side had the better of the early exchanges dominating possession with Jack Monaghan pulling the strings in midfield. Bagnalstown kept the pressure, which resulted in a number of corners expertly whipped in by Alex Doyle but New Oak's Cian Hyland and Daniel Nolan put their bodies on the line to stop the attacks.

New Oak goalkeeper Cathal Kennedy kept his side in it with a number of great clearances. New Oak grew into the game with Kalem Geoghegan and Darragh Casey winning some crucial tackles.

Kiegan Lawlor had the best chance of the first half when he skipped by a couple of defenders before crashing the ball off the cross bar. Dathi Roche was dominant in the air for Bagnalstown and Ben Kelly went close with a couple of efforts but it ended 0-0 at half time.

The New Oak management made changes at half time and this paid dividends instantly when Kiegan Lawlor broke down the wing and crossed for the substitute Keelan Brennan to score with his first touch, when he tapped in at the back post, 1-0 New Oak.

This gave New Oak confidence and Cormac Murphy started to have more influence on the game, it was Murphy’s through ball to Kiegan Lawlor who cut in from the left wing to bend the ball past the Bagnalstown keeper into the corner of the net, brilliant finish 2-0 New Oak.

New Oak were solid from then on with Mia Farrell working hard to deny any space for the Bagnalstown midfield. The third and final goal came by way of a speculative effort from New Oak full back Jamie Doody, when Doody latched onto the ball from 40 yards out and hit it, the cross come shot deceived the Bagnalstown keeper and flew into the net. 3-0 New Oak.

Bagnalstown tried to play their way back into the game through Jake Slatarecki and Ben Kelly but the New Oak defender Cormac Lowry was solid in his position. The home team kept up the work rate to close out the game. Some really good football played by both teams in tough conditions.

Best for New Oak Cian Hyland, Cormac Lowry, Darragh Casey and Kiegan Lawlor.

Best for Bagnalstown Dathai Roche, Jack Monaghan, Alex Doyle and Ben Kelly

Hard day at the office for Hanover Harps who met St Anne's on a wet and windy morning in The Plots. It was a very tight affair with both teams battling hard to take control.

A very evenly matched game with chances few and far between. St Anne's put the ball in the back of the net after 26 minutes but it was disallowed for a foul on the Hanover keeper. Half time score 0-0.

In the second half Hanover came out strong but found it very hard to get through the solid St Anne's backline. With both teams still battling hard, a goal finally came in the 66th minute for St Anne's Ryan Morgan from a quick free kick which caught Hanover’s defence off guard. Final score 1-0 to St Anne's.

St Joseph's welcomed Nurney to McArdle's cross today for this local derby, St Joseph's started the better and had the run of the chances, Daniel Byrne, and Donnacha Moran were full of running and were putting the Nurney defence under pressure.

Cillian Mc Ateer and Dán Kehoe were very tricky pushing forward from midfield, however Nurney goalkeeper Noah Doyle was on top form and kept them at bay - half time 0-0.

Second half saw Nurney improve and become more of a threat going forward, ten minutes in they were rewarded when Conor Salmon  slotted home.

St Joseph's fought hard for the equilizer and Nurney caught them on the counter attack to make it 2-0 with Adam Janus finishing past the advancing keeper. Under 12 League Division One 2022/23

Ballymurphy Celtic   2,  New Oak Boys AFC  1
Saturday 26 November 2022  Ballymurphy

The two teams served up an outstanding game, Bally played against a very strong wind in the 1st half and an unbelievable defensive display from the goalkeeper and three backs after some heavy pressure from New Oak who had help due to the heavy wind. But due to Ballymurphy’s strong character they took the lead 25 mins thanks to a great Noah Fitzpatrick goal, 1-0 at the break.

Bally showed no slowing down as the whistle blew for the start of 2nd half and even though the wind had died down, a good New Oak side had no answer to the pressure put on by Bally. It was attack after attack but then against the run of play New Oak equalised

It was a nail in the heart to take but the penny dropped with the Bally lads, who really went into 5th gear in the final 10mins, it was two and fro and Callum Kelly brought off 3 great saves in succession, a display that his goalkeeping coach Shay Ivers will be proud of.

It came down to the resilient Bally tearing down the wing with Rory Murphy and Finn Scully tearing the New Oak defence to shreds and a pass in to the brilliant Noah Fitz to put past the New Oak keeper to win the game for Bally in the last few mins. A richly deserved win.

The nine starting players and two subs were magnificent and it’s a game I think that would be impossible to single out any one Bally player but a huge mention has to go to Joe Walsh at centre back who stood strong along with John Joyce and Ardagh O Shea.

It was a great team performance from a gallant New Oak side.

Under 12 League Division Two 2022/23

St Fiacc's AFC   3,  Killeshin AFC  1
Saturday 26 November 2022  St Patricks College via George bernard shaw

In very difficult wet and windy conditions it was a very competitive first 15 minutes with both teams having some really good chances. St Fiaccs opened the scoring with great build up play between Callum Farrell and Tommy Keating putting a ball through for Dylan Doyle to slot home on 17 min. Two minutes later Filipe got the second for St Fiaccs on the 19th minute. Just before half time Tommy Keating linked up with Dylan Doyle again for Dylan's second of the game with an impressive finish. Half time 3-0.

Second half was a much more competitive half with Killeshin starting off the stronger of the two sides and in the 47th minute they pulled one back to make it 3-1. St Fiaccs battled hard and with Jack Scully making some great saves they seen the game through till the end. A very competitive game considering the conditions that both teams were up against. Finl score 3-1 to St Fiaccs.

Best for St Fiaccs: Tommy Keating , Jack Scully and Dylan Doyle.

A good all round team performance from Killeshin

Burrin Celtic AFC   0,  Slaney Rovers AFC  5
Saturday 26 November 2022  The Valley Ballon (Burrin Celtic)

Burrin Celtic were hosting Slaney Rovers in The Valley this week. Slaney started very strong and with a really strong wind took the initiative scoring three early goals. While Slaney remained on top for the majority of the game Burrin Celtic would not lie down and put in a sterling second half performance, despite it being a comfortable victory for Celtic, they could hold their heads high at the end and never at any stage gave up.

Best for Burrin; Callum Maloney, Jesse O'Neill, Padraig Holden

Joseph Bello and Abdallah Mbamba got the second half goals for St Pats.

Under 12 League Division Three 2022/23

Ballymurphy Celtic   2,  Vale Wanderers AFC  2
Saturday 26 November 2022  Ballymurphy

A miserable afternoon in Ballymurphy saw Celtic drop their first points of the season.
Ballymurphy had a slow tired start, was the toy show the night before to blame? The wind? The horizontal rain? Or was it the strong Vale side who started from the first whistle?
Vale were very dominant for the first 10 minutes. Winning every 50/50 ball. On 12 minutes Ethan Chambers found himself in space. He smashed a shot from just outside the box, the ball slipped through the goalkeeper’s wet gloves.1-0 Vale. Finally Ballymurphy got going and seen their best spell of the game. On 18 minutes Danny Jordan picked up the ball in the center of the park, some clever footwork and a lovely through ball sent Sam Traynor away. Sam left two defenders in his wake before curling a lovely little shot to make it 1-1. Four minutes later Ruairi O'Brien put Bally ahead when he went on a solo run down the right wing and his goal bound shot took a slight deflection and went past the Vale keeper. Bobby Ivers in goal ensured Bally finished the half ahead when he bravely saved at the feet of an onrushing striker. It finished 2 - 1 to Ballymurphy at halftime.

In the second half Vale, playing with the wind, really turned up the pressure and Ballymurphy seldom troubled the Vale goal. The trio of Frankie Doyle, Ethan Chambers and Conor Ryan in Vales midfield linked up really well. Vale created chance after chance but the Bally boys stood their ground. With two in the first half and two in the second half has seen Zenon Jordan master the art of the last-ditch tackle. Cillian Foley cleared ball after ball, never putting a foot wrong all game. Eventually Vale, with a bit of luck, scored the equaliser on 45 minutes. Ruairi Farrell pounced on a loose ball and found himself 1-on-1 with Bobby Ivers. Bobby got a foot to the low shot but the ball trickled over the line. 2-2 the final result.

Best for Ballymurphy: Zenon Jordan, Bobby Ivers, Cillian Foley.

Best for Vale: Frankie Doyle, Ethan Chambers, Conor Ryan.

Burrin Celtic AFC   0,  St Patrick's Boys AFC  3
Saturday 26 November 2022  The Valley Ballon (Burrin Celtic)

Burrin Celtic welcomed St Patricks to The Valley on Saturday in this under 16 girls league game.

With a very strong wind blowing right down the pitch it was Burrin who won the toss and decided to play with the wind and it really was a huge factor in the game with St Patrick’s finding it very difficult to get out of their own half in the early stages

. Burrin’s midfield of Leah Mannion, Molly Maher and Sami Salter were winning most of the balls in the center. St Patrick’s were first to score with great movement down Burrin’s right wing and a great delivery from Molly Cowman for St Patrick’s found Summer Doorley on the back post to put them 1-0 in the lead.

Burrin almost hit back straight away but Shannon Greene's shot just crept wide. St Patrick’s made it 2-0 just before half time with a brilliant free kick from Emily Kelly.

The second half saw St Patricks enjoying the wind at their backs and it was Burrins turn to fight against the strong wind, Sarah Duffy and Eimear Nolan were putting in a massive effort in the Burrin defence to keep St Pats out, Leah Fitzpatrick was coming more into the game for Burrin and made some huge runs at the St Patrick’s defence.

St Patricks made it 3-0 late on when a defensive header found its way in to the Burrin goal. Final result 3-0nwin for St Ptrick’s Boys.

Best for Burrin were Sarah Duffy, Leah Mannion and Leah Fitzpatrick.

Best for St Patrick’s were Summer Doorley, Kate Culleton and Grace Walker.

New Oak Boys AFC Pink   4,  Nurney Villa AFC  2
Saturday 26 November 2022  Burrin Rd Carlow (New Oak Boys)

It was the first meeting of both these teams this season in very wet conditions. Both teams started brightly and it was New Oak who broke through after 10 mins with Realtin Ryan’s finish. On 19 mins New Oak were awarded a penalty which the Nurney keeper saved majestically. Nurney battled hard to get back into it and they did when they scored twice in the space of two mins with goals from Natalia Deka & Rebecca Birmingham to leave Nurney on top 1-2 at half time.

New Oak started the second half strong and after some fantastic defending from Nurney they finally found the net after a cracking strike from Aoibhe Halligan Murphy to bring it back to 2-2. New Oak pressed high up the pitch in the last ten minutes and Aoibhe Halligan Murphy & Lucy Grogan both found the net to finish it 4-2 to New Oak Girls Pink.

Fantastic individual performances from all the New Oak girls.

While best for Nurney were Hannah Murphy, Holly Murphy & Carly Doyle.

Saturday 26 November 2022  Burrin Rd Carlow (New Oak Boys)

H-T 2-1.

Girls U14 SFAI Cup 2022/23

Clonmel   1,  St Fiacc's AFC  5
Saturday 26 November 2022

St Fiaccs u14 girls continued their good run in this SFAI competition with a convincing result against Clonmel. St Fiaccs took the lead against the run of play and against a very strong wind when Hannah Matthews sent a rocket of a shot into the net from a corner kick. Clonmel battled back and equalised a few minutes later. St Fiaccs battled well for the remainder of the half and went in level 1-1.

With the wind to help Fiaccs took control of the game when Katelyn Moran sent a shot from well outside the box to the back of the net. Clonmel tried to fight back but a brilliant counter attack saw Ashlee Smith increase the lead after some excellent work from Ali O Connor and Leah Cummins Nelson which saw the ball worked out from the Fiaccs backline. Hanna Kerfah added to the score line with another shot from outside the area and Ashlee Smith completed the scoring with her second of the game. Again Clonmel battled back and only for two brilliant saves from Nicole Osborne the score line could have been closer. Final score was 1-5 to St Fiaccs.

Best for St Fiaccs were Leah Cummins Nelson, Hannah Matthews and Jasmine Doyle.
