GEOGHEGAN SPOT ON AS NEW OAK SINK ARDEE

GEOGHEGAN SPOT ON AS NEW OAK SINK ARDEE

Sfai U14 Trophy 2022/23

New Oak Boys AFC     3,    v    Ardee      3,

(New Oak Win 6-5 after penalty shootout)

Saturday 25 March 2023 Burrin Road, Carlow (New Oak Boys)

Saturday afternoon saw New Oak F.C. face Ardee Celtic in the last 16 of the SFAI Cup. Ardee got the game started with a long ball to their winger who straight away put the pressure onto New Oaks back four, with the defence coming out on top.

New Oak grew in confidence as the opening minutes continued and within fifteen minutes Kiegan Lawlor picked up on a well-placed pass from New Oaks midfielder Cormac Murphy, he beats the full back on the outside before directing his run towards goal and slotted the first home.

Ardee battled strong for the following five minutes creating a number of dangerous opportunities of their own unfortunately not to any avail, New Oak then weathered the storm to create their second chance of the game which was scored by Darragh Casey. Ardee continued their excellent team play and were rewarded with a goal of their own which gave them confidence at the closing of the first half, which ended 2-1 to the home side.

The confidence only grew with Ardee scoring the first goal of the second half and the goal that brought it back to a level score.

Ardee continued their confidence creating chances and linking play from their defence right the way through to their attack. New Oak finally settled the game to their favour displaying the team quality they produced numerous times throughout this competition, passing the ball well between the midfield and wingers before Kiegan Lawlor picked up his second goal of the day.

Ardee didn't let this slow them down, creating a number of quality chances especially down their right side, but with Siobhan Sinnott showing her absolute top class defensive qualities New Oak were in good hands.

Ardee then transitioned from back to front as New Oak were finding their shape, this resulted in a throw in to Ardee which created their third and the final goal of the allotted seventy minutes.

As the game entered extra time, both teams created chance after chance but each time their chances succumbed to the heroics of both goalkeepers keeping the game level, and as the nerves of penalties loomed the Paupish grew silent.

Adonai Ngenkam, Cormac Murphy, Kiegan Lawlor, Cian Hyland, and Darragh Casey all scored New Oaks first five penalties with Ardee matching them kick for kick. Kalem Geoghegan stepped up for New Oak’s sixth penalty before slotting home. Unfortunately for Ardee their sixth penalty couldn't sneak in under the bar, hitting it and bouncing back.

Everyone at New Oak F.C would like to thank everyone at Ardee Celtic for making the trip down, and playing a fantastic game for the fans and coaches to enjoy, we would also like to wish them the best for the remainder of their season.

Bagenalstown AFC     1,    v    Hanover Harps AFC     0,

Saturday 25 March 2023 McGrath Park, Bagenalstown

Bagenalstown welcomed Hanover to the McGrath Park this morning, always a good competitive game between these two sides and the trend continued with Bagenalstown probably starting the better.

The town got plenty of ball down the right-hand side with Aiden Hickey and James Brennan breaking free on more than one occasion. The visitors looked to play on the counter and got through Bagenalstown’s defence a few times only to be hauled back for offside. Bagenalstown just shading it with more possession. First half ended in a stalemate 0-0.

The second half was more an even game with some good passing moves but both defences on top. Bagenalstown were starting to get on top with James Brennan coming close with his effort.

Mid-way through the second half Bagenalstowns won a free out wide on the right, John Lillis took it and Davey Reading powered it home. Hanover gave it their all pressing forward  looking for an equaliser but Randallstown’s defence looked comfortable and the town held out for the win.

Best for Town was all three defenders James Brennan and Aiden Hickey impressed.

Best for Hanover Alex Mezur and Leon Fitzgerald

Under 15 League Division 2 2022/23

St Patrick’s Boys AFC     4,    v    Slaney Rovers AFC     1,

Saturday 25 March 2023 The Meadows, Graiguecullen (St Pats Boys)

This was a game played under cold but sunny conditions on St. Patrick's Boys AFC Astro. This was a game that both sides had to win. Both teams started well with St. Pat's creating some great chances. St. Pat's scored 1st through Andrew Monteiro about 15 minutes jnto the first half. Despite some impressive defending Andrew scored his second just before the end of the half. Halftime score St Pats 2-0 Slaney.

St. Pat's started the second half well and within a few minutes of the start John Hendricken scored a cracker of a goal after some fine footwork to get him in a position to shoot. Against the run of play Slaney scored an excellent goal, but Pat's  put the game to bed with a fourth goal from Danny Serafin. Final scoreline St Pat’s 4-1 Slaney.

A good result for St. Pat's. No man of the match as a great overall team performance from 1 to 16.

Under 15 League Division 2 2022/23

Vale Wanderers AFC     5,    v    New Oak Boys AFC     1,

Saturday 25 March 2023 The Superbowl, Leighlinbridge (Vale Wanderers)

Vale Wanderers took an early hold on proceedings against New Oak with Fionn Forde and Alan Fitzgerald netting in quick succession before Odhran Murphy got in on the act. Alan Fitzgerald doubled his tally midway through the half  before Conor Comerford's hard work paid off after his initial effort struck the post. New Oak worked tirelessly throughout with AJ Core particularly prominent throughout.

The second half saw New Oaks AJ Core find the net from a free kick to reward his and in particular Kyle Hutton’s, Zenan Cullen’s and Keelan McGrath's hard work throughout. Final score Vale Wnderers 5-0 New Oak Boys.

Best for Vale were Conor Comerford, Adam Dowling and Alan Fitzgerald.

Under 15 League Division 2 2022/23

Ballymurphy Celtic AFC     3,    v    Parkville United AFC     0,

Saturday 25 March 2023 Ballymurphy

This was a tight game to begin with before Eoin Condren whipped in a cross and Toby Joyce with a brilliant first touch finished well to get Bally off to a good start on 14 mins. Conor Walsh then doubled the lead on 20mins with a shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards. 2 - 0 to Ballymurphy at HT.

Parkville started the second half well but Ballymurphy put the game to bed on 55 mins when a determined Lucais Doherty forced the ball home from a corner. To make the  final score Ballymurphy Celtic 3-0 Parkville United.

Best for Bally Thomas Sheehan, Darragh Coleman and Toby Joyce.

It was a solid team performance from Parkville.

Under 13 League Division One 2022/23

Ballymurphy Celtic AFC     2,    v    Crettyard United AFC     1,

Saturday 25 March 2023 Ballymurphy

This was a good tight affair between two evenly matched teams with Bally coming out on top thanks to a late brace of goals from James Flood. It was a very even game with few chances in the first half for either team and the bumpy surface wasn’t helping either team’s attempts to play football. Adam Roman was a constant threat on the left wing for Cretty and nearly opened the scoring after 20 mins but Jack Ivers pulled off a brilliant save to keep the game scoreless. At the other end Charlie Foley was also giving Bally a great outlet and on a couple of occasions only the bounce of the ball stopped him from getting a few chances on target. Score 0-0 at half-time.

The second half started in the same vein with both teams struggling to pass the ball on a poor surface. Crettyard took the lead in the 42nd min thanks to a corner taken by Aaron Brennan which somehow evaded three defenders on the front post and ended up in the back of the net. Bally then introduced Danny Jordan for the last 15mins and this sparked them into life, after 51 mins James Flood scored a free kick from 20 yards out after Danny had been fouled on the left hand side of the pitch and following some sustained pressure from Bally they took the lead from a corner by Dylan King which was finished to the back of the net from 5yards out by James Flood with 5mins left. Crettyard pressed hard for the equaliser in the remaining few mins but Bally held strong and took the points with maybe Crettyard a bit unlucky not to take a share of the points. Final score Ballymurphy 2-1 Crettyard.

For Bally Charlie Foley, Oisin Fogarty and Danny Jordan were excellent

For Crettyard Adam Rowen, Darragh Curran and Mia Kearney played very well.

Hanover Harps AFC     4,    v    Burrin Celtic AFC     0,

Saturday 25 March 2023 The Plots. Carlow (Hanover Harps)

Burrin Celtic’s unbeaten record in the u13’s competition came to an end this morning.  Burrin Celtic travelled to Hanover Harps on a fine morning with the home side coming away with a comfortable win (4-0).  With a full-strength squad, the Hanover camp were keen for retribution after suffering defeat to Burrin Celtic two weeks earlier.   Hanover Harps outbattled Burrin Celtic across the field with a great team performance. Hanover’s first goal came after about 6 minutes when Mael O’Rock slipped a pass to Shay O’Grady who took a long range shot on goal powering over the Burrin Celtic keepers head.  Hanover added two more goals before the end of the first half with super goals coming from Owen Fitzharris who carefully picked his spot under huge pressure from the Burrin defense after a fine through ball from Andrian Robu and Robu saw his own effort find the net shortly afterwards. H/T Hanover 3-0 Burrin.

Burrin Celtic had some good opportunities in the second half but for some fine goalkeeping from Daire Brady between the Harps sticks. The visitors probably had their best chance early in the second half with a free but Hanover keeper made a brilliant save.  Hanover Harps final goal came around the 45th minute from a very low header by Nathanial Jakubiec that skipped over the goal line yielding a winning margin equal to their losing margin in the team’s prior encounter. Final score Hanover 4-0 Burrin

Best for Hanover were, Daire Brady, Maesfi Islam, Shay O'Grady and Owen Fitzharris.

Under 13 League Division One 2022/23

Vale Wanderers AFC     2,    v    Parkville United AFC     2,

Saturday 25 March 2023 The Superbowl, Leighlinbeidge (Vale Wanderers)

It was a beautiful sunny morning in The Superbowl as Vale Wanderers welcomed Parkville Utd for what proved to be an exciting game of football. However It was the visitors who started the brighter grabbing the first goal of the game with Thomàs Doran firing home from close range after a poorly cleared corner kick in the opening minutes. There were half chances for both sides, but the half ended 0-1 to the visitors.

Vale came out after half time a different team and began to play much better football. They got back on level terms when a pass from Diarmuid Redmond found Mathew Jordan, who finished smartly to bring the game level. Vale, now with their tails up, turned the screw and following a lofted ball from Jason Kelly, Shaun Sibanda held off the challenges and found the back of the net with around ten minutes left to play. The Tullow outfit re-grouped and began to search for an equaliser, but the Vale rear-guard held firm with Joey Drea and Brendan Byrne making several crucial interventions. One of those clearances led to a late corner and Parkville, with one last push grabbed an equaliser with just minutes left on the clock, which was finished by Kia Quinn and the scoreline finished honours even at 2-2.

Best for Vale were: Joey Drea, Shaun Sibanda, Brendan Byrne.

Best for Parkville were: Conor Butler, Paudi Connelly, Oisin Wall.

New Oaks Boys AFC     0,    v    St Patrick’s Boys AFC     2,

Saturday 25 March 2023 Burrin Road, Carlow (New Oak Boys)

The league leaders St Pats scored early in this match and never looked like letting that lead slip.

Six minutes in Jonah Brennan was at the back post to capitalise on a loose ball to put the visitors ahead. Twelve minutes in and Gabriel De Sa put in a great cross which Cody Byrne stretched to try get his head on the end of but it just evaded him. On 15 minutes Ryan Doody curled a lovely free kick in off the underside of the bar to put Pats 2-0 up. It was to-and-fro for much of the half with Pats deservedly going in 2-0 up.

The 2nd half saw both sides battle hard, with Pats having the better of the chances. But try as they might neither side could score and the game ended New Oak 0-2 St Patrick’s Boys.

Best for New Oak were Evan Glynn, Aj Bolger, Kieran Holbrook & Hugh Collins.

Best for St Pats were Ryan Doody, Jonah Brennan & Jamaal Adegoke.

Vale Wanderers AFC     3,    v    Slaney Rovers AFC     5,

Saturday 25 March 2023 The Superbowl, Leighlinbeidge (Vale Wanderers)

On a day of very changeable weather, Slaney got off to a very bright start and took the lead in the first minute of the match from the very first attack of the game. A young Vale lineup remained under pressure for much of the first half but continued to battle hard and grabbed a goal with a good move which was finished off well by Frankie Doyle to leave the half-time score 1-5 to the visitors.

The heavens opened early in the second half, along with the floodgates, as the home team started playing some very good passing football. Romeo Sithibe struck an excellent freekick from 25 yards out into the top corner and a good run and tidy finish from Doyle for his second of the match were just reward for a much improved second half performance from the home side. Final score Vale 3-5 Slaney.

Best for Vale: Adam Keating, Frankie Doyle & Ethan Chambers.

Vale goalscorers: Frankie Doyle & Romeo Sithibe.

Best for Slaney: Will Darcy, Rory Cullen & Rian Nolan.

Goalscorer for Slaneys:  Callum McCabe, Rian Nolan, Timmy Jackson & Ronan Bonchar.

Under 16 Girls League 2022/23

Nurney Villa AFC     0,    v    Burrin Celtic AFC     3,

Saturday 25 March 2023 Augha Road, Nurney

Burrin Celtic came out strongest in this match played in good conditions on an excellent pitch on Saturday morning, with the breeze influencing the game at times, and the sun smiling occasionally during the match. Burrin started off strongly with some attacks down their right wing, and it was from one of these early attacks that Burrin put in an inviting cross that fell to Leah Fitzgerald 12 yards out. She hammered the ball towards the goal, it hit the underside of the cross bar, rebounded off the back of the unlucky Nurney keeper, and into the net. Both teams worked hard in midfield, with Mai Cradock of Nurney making good progress at times, and she very nearly played in Kelly Tobin through on goal, but the Burrin goalkeeper, Kaitlyn Sheppard, was out very quickly to win the ball at Tobin’s feet.  Nurney were forced to make a change, due to an injury to Hannah Watters, who had been putting in great work in the left back position. It is hoped that she makes a speedy recovery. The game was in the balance, 0-1 to Burrinl at half-time.

Both teams came out in determined mood in the second half, with both teams pressing forward. However, Burrin it was that got the next goal, with an India Mernagh shot from the edge of the area finding the corner of the net. Nurney pushed forward, but from a Burrin Celtic breakaway, Leah Fitzpatrick killed off Nurney’s hopes with Burrin’s third goal. Final score Nurney 0-3 Burrin.

Best for Nurney were Doireann O’Toole, Katie Cowman and Holly Ryan, who all put in great efforts.

Best for Burrin Celtic were Lucy Simms, Shannon Green and Kaitlyn Sheppard.
