SFAI U13 Cup 2022/23
Freebooters 5, Hanover Harps AFC 0
Friday 18 November 2022 Kells Road Kilkenny
A very cold November night in The Watershed in Kilkenny for the meeting of Freebooters
and Hanover Harps in the Sfai U13 Cup. If the gathering of ice on the bottom of their boots
was anything to go by Harps knew they were in for a tough night against a very organized
and well coached team in Freebooters. As soon as the 4th minute Freebooters were ahead
with a well worked goal and soon after they doubled their lead with a deep cross that found
the inside of the net on the back post. Harps managed to eventually gain some composure
with a couple of forays into the home teams half but to no avail. The score remained 2-0 at
the break.
Booters started much the same in the second half but Harps were definitely more up for it and
try as they might just could not break down a stern defence in the Kilkenny men. Freebooters
went up the other end and were awarded a penalty for what looked like a fair challenge but
Harps pleas fell on deaf ears and the penalty was duly dispatched, 3-0 to the home team and
naturally the Carlow men's heads began to drop though they never gave up the fight and
eventually succumbed to number 4 and 5 of the night. A tough night for Harps and a
thoroughly deserved 5-0 win for Booters who advance to the next round whilst Harps will get
another run out in the sfai trophy, Well done to both sets of players
SFAI U15 Trophy 2022/23
Callan United 4, Hanover Harps AFC 5
Hanover were away to Callan United and straight from the kick off Hanover thought they had
the dream start when Leon Fitzgerald put a ball to the left foot of TJ Brennan who's shot just
went past the post. Callan keeper was quick with the kick out and caught the Harps defence
sleeping and Callan number 10 shot on target found the back of the net. Harps got into the
game and when Leon tipped the ball back to John Corcoran who put it over the Callan
defence to find Sean Hayden who after taking on the Callan defence slotted the ball into the
bottom left corner for 1-1 and it was game on. Some great soccer followed for the next 15
mins as both teams pressured the ball but it was the Harps who took the game by the grasp
when TJ Brennan from a corner kick found the head of Sean Hayden to put the harps ahead.
Callan United kicked off and a mix up on the ball found Leon Fitzgerald take the ball to the
Callan keeper and a lovely taken goal. Hanover 3 Callan United 1 at half time.
Second half started with Harps applying all the pressure and were awarded with a goal when
Leon Fitzgerald shot from just outside the 18-yard box found the top corner of the net. Callan
United never gave up and got awarded a goal when lovely play from the half way found
Callan number 10 who made no mistake in slotting the ball home. The game faded out until
the last 10 mins of the match when Callan United got a second wind and got themselves two
more goals from set plays to level the score at 4-4 and the game was edge of the seat stuff
until Harps got goal number five following a mix up in the Callan box and when the ball fell
to the feet of Peter Lynch and he found the net with a well taken goal to put Harps back in
front and went on to win the game Callan United 4 Hanover Harps 5.
SFAI U13 Trophy 2022/23
Burrin Celtic AFC 5, Park Rangers 4
Saturday 19 November 2022 The Valley Ballon (Burrin Celtic)
Two well drilled teams met in Burrin on a freezing cold Saturday morning. Glen Cantwell
scored a screamer after 10 minutes to put Burrin 1-0 up. The two teams played some really
good football and created a lot of chances. Burrin largely dominated the first half and could
have scored more. Park Rangers scored their equaliser just before the half time break to make
it 1-1 at half time.
Burrin came out fighting in the second half and took their chance when Robbie Kelliher put
Burrin ahead. Both teams played cautiously from here but Park Rangers scored with just a
few minutes to go to bring the game into extra time. Full-time score 2-2.
The first half of extra time was all the away side and they went 3-2 up after 65 minutes. They
carried the momentum into the second half of extra time and went 4-2 up and thought the
game was over from there. After a few changes from Burrin they produced an unbelievable
fighting spirit as the home side looked like they got a new lease of life. Glen Cantwell went
down in the box and got a penalty, which he converted to make it 4-3. With just 4 minutes to
go, the man of the match Bill Roberts was through on goal after Ciaran Redmond played the
ball through, and Bill slotted it past the keeper. Park Rangers thought they had the game won
after the Burrin keeper was caught off his line and a shot on goal from Park seemed destined
for the back of the net, but Sean Dunne with an unbelievable goal line clearance gave Burrin
even more momentum. With just 2 minutes to go, Bobby Finn played the same ball through
to Bill Roberts and he slotted it home to progress Burrin to the next round on 5-4 scoreline.
An absolutely amazing game for both sides, with every player, parent and coach going
through so many emotions in the final minutes. Credit to both teams for their performance
after a long game. Man of the match was Burrin’s Bill Roberts, but also excelling were Daire
Nolan, Ciaran Redmond and Glen Cantwell.
SFAI U13 Trophy 2022/23
Stoneyford United 2, New Oak Boys AFC 2
Saturday 19 November 202
On a cold and blustery afternoon in Knocktopher, both sides took their time to settle into the
game and adapt to conditions. Little goalmouth action or chances for either team in the early
stages of the first half. However on 18mins good work down the right yielded a corner to
New Oak and with a delightful ball in from Keelan Brennan, a scramble ensued and New
Oak’s Zack Kelly was on hand to drive left-footed to the back of the net to give New Oak the
lead. It was soon after New Oak started to dominate possession and a long ball into the box
caused panic in Stonyford’s defence and a clear handball resulted in a penalty to New Oak.
Up stepped New Oak’s captain Cormac Lowry to coolly slot the ball to the back of the net
with the help of the post. Stoneyford didn't drop their heads either and good work down the
right resulted in a corner for them just on the stroke of half time. The ball broke to the edge of
the box from the corner and Stoneyford’s no 4 drove a sweet shot to the back of New Oaks
net to make it 2-1 at half time.
With the wind behind them, New Oak dominated the ball for the early stages of the second
half but Stoneyford broke up-field and a long ball into the box caused a bit of a mix up which
resulted in a penalty, which Stoneyford’s No 11 put away to make it 2-2. Both sides had
chances to win it and New Oak even hit the post but it ended 2-2 after 60mins.
10min a side in extra time couldn't divide the teams or generate a goal and so it went to a
penalty shootout. It was 3-3 after 5 penalties apiece and when New Oak’s first penalty in
Sudden Death was saved by Stonyford’s goalkeeper, their no 14 slotted home the decisive
penalty to win the contest 4-3. Well done to Stoneyford and very hard luck to New Oak Boys,
who on another day, could have been victorious.
Best for New Oak on the day was Cormac Lowry, Dara Tunstead, Conor Dooley and Zack
Kelly.
Best for Stoneyford were No 1, 4 & 7.
Under 15 League Division 1 2022/23
St Joseph's AFC 1, Crettyard United AFC 2
Saturday 19 November 2022 McArdle Cross Tinryland (St Josephs)
The game began with great play from both teams and it took till the 30th minute for James
Keating to find the back of Joeys net after a drop ball was awarded to Crettyard. The score
remained 1-0 at half time.
The second half began with great pressure from both sides, 10 mins in Mikey Byrne from St
Joseph's was awarded a penalty which resulted in a goal from Walter Webb making it 1-1.
The match continued with great football, Crettyard scored their second goal from a super free
kick taken by Seamus Lynch into the top corner of Joeys net. St Joseph's continued to pile on
the pressure but the Crettyard defence were a match for them. Final score St Josephs 1
Crettyrd United 2.
Despite the loss St Josephs squad was strengthened by the return of some injured players.
Best for Crettyard were Fionan Brennan, Bobby Rohan and Daniel Lawlor.
Best for St Josephs were Zac Nolan, Jamie Doyle, Cathal Purcell and Walter Webb.
Under 15 League Division 2 2022/23
Vale Wanderers AFC 1, Slaney Rovers AFC 5
Saturday 19 November 2022 Superbowl Leighlinbridge (Vale Wanderers)
A clinical Slaney Rovers outfit took the points on offer in the Superbowl, their ability to take
the goal chances when they came being the difference, Taylor Ryan's goal on 20 mins a case
in point, the butt of both posts hit for the deadlock breaker, Vale pressure either side of the
goal keeping Callum Boland on his toes but half time came with Slaney still 1-0 up.
.
Straight from the 2nd half kickoff Jack Kelly netted from distance to double their advantage,
this was soon cancelled out by a cracking Ciaran Bambrick top corner effort from the edge of
the box, Vale trying desperately for an equaliser found Boland in fine form and his
teammates rewarded him with Jack Corcoran netting a brace before Hugh Gartland netted
their fifth to reward a great team performance and take the win over an out of sorts Vale who
had Daniel Brennan, Radek Brezeniski and Adam Dowling prominent.
Under 15 League Division 2 2022/23
St Annes AFC 5, New Oak Boys AFC 0
Saturday 19 November 2022 Ballylinan (St Annes)
Both sides met on a cold morning for the first meeting of this year. Annes started well within
the first couple of mins which saw an Oisin Kelly shot saved by the keeper only for it to fall
to Oisin again who fired another great strike which saw another great save from New Oaks
keeper. New Oak tried to catch Annes on the break but St Annes defence played great and
stayed strong. Annes had several chances but New Oak managed to get their lines clear each
time. Annes scored their first goal from a corner ball that spilled to the waiting Emil. First
half ended 1-0.
Annes came out in the second half on fire and a great run from Eoin Kelly saw Dinh Kaye
score within a few mins of kick off. Annes were on top and Eoin Kelly crossed in a ball
which caused a mix up in the away defence and New Oak scored an own goal. New Oak
pressed hard but St Annes keeper John Julian stayed strong. New Oak were given a penalty
but missed from the spot. Annes piled on the pressure again and saw shots saved again by
New Oaks keeper. Annes finished the score sheet off by another goal from the waiting Lee
Dempsey. St Annes controlled the midfield with Oisin Kelly and Max O Connor putting in
great performances to make it hard on New Oak to break. Final score 5-0 to St Annes.
Great game from both sides best for St Annes were Eoin Kelly and Alex Zigure.
All for New Oak played well.
Under 13 League Division One 2022/23
Ballymurphy Celtic 2, Baltinglass Town AFC 4
Saturday 19 November 2022 Ballymurphy
This was a very good game of football between two evenly matched sides. Baltinglass took
an early lead through a great free kick before Bally equalised on 24 mins when Oisin Fogarty
and Charlie Foley combined to set up Cian Moylan to equalise with a great shot. Baltinglass
then retook the lead on 27 mins after a great through ball. Half-time 1-2.
Ballymurphy dominated the early stages of the second half and came close on 45 mins when
Shane Jordan was put through one on one but the Baltinglass goalkeeper made a great save.
Then with 10 mins to go, Ballymurphy were denied what looked a stone wall penalty after a
handball on the goal-line but the referee gave a free out. Baltinglass then got a penalty of
their own with 5 mins to go and after Jack Ivers made a brilliant save the penalty taker slotted
home the rebound. Bally pulled one back through Shane Jordan with 2 mins to go before
Baltinglass wrapped up the points on the full-time whistle. Final score 2-4 win for Baltinglass
Town.
Best for Bally were Conor Walsh, Jack Ivers and Charlie Foley
Under 13 League Division Two 2022/23
Vale Wanderers AFC 1, New Oak Boys AFC 5
Saturday 19 November 2022 Superbowl Leighlinbridge (Vale Wanderers)
What appeared a difficult fixture on paper for the home side was made all the harder by
having to play the opening 15mins with 10 players. But Vale battled hard and were only a
goal down when they got the full complement on the pitch. Adam Keating put in an excellent
shift and was alert to every through ball that New Oak played. There were half chances at
both ends but New Oak looked the more likely to score and they had doubled their lead at
half-time.
Vale came out in the second half showing a bit more composure and determination.
Conor Ryan, Frankie Doyle and Bill Hayden combined well to create an opportunity for
Ruairí Farrell to time a late run into the area and finish from close range, making it 1-2. It
looked like Vale were coming back but some sloppy play let New Oak in to score again with
Luke Honeyball getting a hand to it but unable to keep it out. At 1-3 Bill Hayden went closest
for the home side, hitting the post with a brilliantly taken header that really deserved to hit the
net. The disappointment of that not crossing the line seemed to drain the Vale player's energy
and New Oak went on to add two more including an excellent strike from distance. Final
score Vale 1 New Oak 5.
Best for Vale were Adam Keating, Josh Dermody, Conor Ryan and Bill Hayden.
Vale Scorer: Ruairí Farrell
New Oak scorers: Michael Myk, Evan Glynn, Fionn Brophy and Gabriel De Sa with a corner
that was deflected in.
Best players for New Oak: Cody Bryne, Luana Whelan and Phoenix Lawlor.
Under 13 League Division Two 2022/23
St Josephs AFC 1, Nurney Villa AFC 2
Saturday 19 November 2022 McArdle Cross Tinryland (St Josephs)
A good end to end game was played out in Tinryland this morning. Nurney settled the
quicker and took a deserved lead from Natalia Deka after Christopher Salmon played a great
pass. St Joseph's started to play some nice football and Philip Adamansk nipped in to draw
the teams level. Just before half-time Eli Fleming put Nurney back in front.
The second half was an end to end affair with St Joseph's pushing for an equaliser but Nurney
held firm. Final Score St Joseph’s 1 Nurney Villa 2.
Best for Nurney were Christopher Salmon and Arron O Brien while Noah Doyle made some
great saves.
Best for St Joseph's were Niall Fennelly, Alex Reid and Shay Ryan.
Under 13 League Division Two 2022/23
St Anne's AFC 4, Parkville United AFC 1
Saturday 19 November 2022 Ballylinan (St Annes)
St.Anne's started strong with Mark Hickey controlling center midfield. Great work on 5
minutes from Cillian Dobbyn earned a throw which was deflected in from Myles Nelligan to
make it 1-0 to St.Anne's. Five minutes later Arron Kaye was fouled 30 yards out and Myles
Nelligan found the net with his second goal of the game. St.Anne's kept the pressure on and
again Myles Nelligan put in a wonderful cross and Jamie Reardon headed brilliantly into the
net for St Annes to led 3-0 at half time.
Second half and the game hit a lull and the visitor's got 1 back. 10 minutes remaining and
Jake Brophy hit a 30-yard shot into the back of the net. The game finished 4-1 to St Annes.
Best for St.Anne's were both center halves Jake Brophy and Robert Brennan, Mark Hickey
and the league's top scorer Myles Nelligan. Great controlled game from start to finish from
St.Anne's.
Under 13 League Division Two 2022/23
Hanover Harps AFC 3, Killeshin AFC 1
Saturday 19 November 2022 The Plots (Hanover Harps)
Hanover started off extremely strong and were in full attack mode. It didn't take long for the
goals to come with power shots from Reece Walker on the 3rd and 12th minute putting
Hanover 2-0 up. Hanover got the 3rd and final goal on the 24th minute after Levi Osaro
broke the offside trap and unfortunately for the Killeshin keeper who had an amazing game
was slightly late with his tackle resulted in a penalty that was perfectly dispatched by Ethan
Walker to make it 3-0. Huge respect to the young men from Killeshin as they showed great
spirit and never gave up and were rewarded on the 30th minute with a fantastic goal from
their number 8. They defended extremely well throughout the second half and kept Hanover
to a few half chances.
Carlow and District Juveniles League
U16 Girls Division – Match of the Week 6.
Report by Bob Howson.
Ballymurphy Celtic AFC 2 – 1 Killeshin AFC.
On a very cold, frosty and windy morning – Ballymurphy entertained Killeshin in
the lea of the hills surrounding their ground.
Ballymurphy started much the brighter of the two teams and Rachel Kennedy went
on a good run, but she sliced her shot and the chance went begging.
Little was seen of Killeshin as an attacking force at this stage and Ballymurphy
were dominating and whilst they were creating numerous chances, they were very
wayward with their shooting and Mia O’Neill, Grainne Grennan and Rachel
Kennedy were all prominent.
Twenty five minutes in and Mia O’Neill got on the ball and she shot from distance
and Killeshin’s keeper – Aoife Mullins partially saved it but it rebounded off her
body and Rachel Kennedy picked up the loose ball and slotted it home for a 1-0
lead.
A great run and cross by Ballymurphy’s - Grainne Grennan again saw the ball
rebound off Aoife Mullins and once again Rachel Kennedy latched on to the loose
ball and slipped it into the corner of the net for 2 – 0 on thirty minutes.
As the interval approached Killeshin started to come into the game with Katie
O’Reilly going close from a long range free-kick, as did Siobahn Doran and Emma
Malone had a good run and cross into the Ballymurphy area.
Half-time came with Ballymurphy hanging on to their 2-0 lead.
Killeshin raised their game and with the advantage of the slope and the wind
started to put Ballymurphy under pressure and from a corner Lucie O’Reilly
tapped home into the Ballymurphy net to make the score 2 -1, which was well
deserved, as she had a fine game so far.
Both sides tried their hardest to get another score but in the conditions, all the girls
were getting tired and there were no clearcut chances and the game ended with a
victory to Ballymurphy by 2 -1.
Standing out for Ballymurphy were Grainne Grennan, Mia O’Neill, Siofra
McGilligan and Rachel Kennedy, whilst best for Killeshin were Lucie O’Reilly,
Katie O’Reilly, Katie Lowry and Emma Malone.
Grainne Grennan was Player of the Match after an outstanding display.

Burrin Celtic AFC 2, Vale Wanderers AFC 1
Saturday 19 November 2022 The Valley Ballon (Burrin Celtic)
Burrin Celtic hosted Vale Wanderers on a very cold Saturday morning. The 1st half saw both
sides very evenly matched. Burrin had many scoring opportunities but found it hard to get
past strong defending from Vale. Burrin’s goalie Sophie Moloney made some brilliant saves
keeping the score 0-0 in the first half.
The 2nd half started off well for Burrin with Robyn McGrath scoring their 1st goal just
minutes into the half. Vale made many attempts on goal but couldn't get past Grace
McDonald in the back line. In the 45min Emma Bergin got Burrin’s 2nd goal. Vale fought
hard and got there 1st goal at the 50min scored by Alisha Nolan. Aine Deacon was denied
another goal for Burrin by a great save from Vales goalie. A great game of soccer today in
the Valley with both sides evenly matched and all girls played brilliant.
Final score Burrin Celtic 2 Vale Wanderers 1.
Best for Vale were Jane Murphy, Sophie Rochford and Abigale O'Gorman.
Best for Burrin were Grace McDonald, Sophie Moloney and Siofra Maxwell.
Under 12 Girls League 2022/23
Ballymurphy Celtic 2, New Oak Boys AFC 5
Saturday 19 November 2022 Ballymurphy
New Oak came to Ballymurphy in good heart this morning and took all three points after a
comprehensive victory. New Oak scored after 5 mins through Emily Carpenter after a great
solo run. Then on 13 mins Ballymurphy equalised after a solo run goal from Hannah Duggan.
New Oak then took over with Emily Carpenter grabbing a second before Daisy Cooney and
Kate Murphy made it 1-4. Emily Carpenter added to New Oak’s tally just before the break
for half time.
.
Ballymurphy came out strong in the second half and got a great goal back through Ciara
Williams from a free kick. However New Oak proved to be the better side on the day in what
was a disappointing performance from the Bally girls.
Best for New Oak were Aylissa Brophy, Kate Dunican and Lucy Lawlor.
Best for Ballymurphy were Faye Doyle, Sophie Redmond and Emma Kavanagh/
Girls U16 SFAI Cup 2022/23
Gorey Rangers 2, Vale Wanderers AFC 0
Saturday 19 November 2022
Gorey Rangers hosted Vale Wanderers in this Sfai 3rd round match on a cold beautiful
morning. Rangers started the game well and passed the ball around with confidence. The
Vale girls started to impose themselves on the game and a volley from Kate Burke was only
inches wide from opening the score. Half way through the 1st half Gorey attacked down the
right wing and the ball was floated in and latched on to by the Rangers centre forward who
drove the ball low into the Vale net. Half time:1-0 to Gorey.
The big moment in the 2nd half came in the 2nd minute when a lack of concentration in the
Vale defence let Rangers through on goal and the ball was buried into the back of the net.
Vale tried hard to reduce the score line and Zoe Clarke was unlucky not to get on the end of a
corner. Rangers went 5 at the back and soaked up any more Vale advances, all the while
having some good chances of their own. Vale's keeper Amy Farrell pulled off a great save
near the end to keep Rangers from adding to the scoreline. The game ended 2-0 to the home
side.
Best for Vale were Moya O'Toole, Chloe Lawlor and Zoe Clarke.
The game was played at a very high level and both teams were a credit to themselves. Vale
Wanderers would like to thank Gorey Rangers for their hospitality and wish them the best of
luck in the rest of the competition.
