MCR take high road to Super League title
In the Sligo Southern Hotel Super League Strand Celtic welcomed Aughanagh Celtic to Strandhill in what was a very tight encounter on Wednesday night.
Both teams tried to take control of the game from the start but struggled to create many clear-cut chances, the closest was captain Aaron O Boyle hitting the crossbar for Strand. Nil all half time.
Strand came into the game more as the game went on, but Aughanagh battled to the very end believing the game was there for them also. It was on the 80th minute where in form Leo Doherty struck on the volley from outside the box that flew over the keeper and into the top right corner.
Aughanagh had a chance at the end with a header from a free kick but was saved brilliantly by young Cathal Morahan. Aughanagh were unable to get the equaliser.
MCR journeyed to the Bee Park on Wednesday night in their quest to tighten their grasp on the Super League title and this they did in style. Donagh Crowne and Jordan Harte hitting two goals apiece Captain Marvel Gary Rooney adding goal number five Seamus Ryder hit the only goal for Manor Rangers while this victory keeps massive pressure on the chasing Carbury.
Carbury obliged with a sweet reply hitting Coolaney Utd for 6 at Mac Sharry Park. Stephen Armstrong netting a hat-trick leading scorer Jason Lyons bagging a double and Rian Gorman scoring as well while Conor Matthews replied once for Coolaney Utd.
Cartron United won shared the spoils thanks to Donal Gallagher bagging 2 goals. Ben Touhy and Luke Flynn captured a vital point for the Harps with a goal each.
On Saturday evening St Johns FC played out a 6-goal draw against Coolaney Utd at Mac Sharry Park. Malachy Spratt on point twice a goal from play and a goal from the penalty spot with Andre Mills notching goal number 3 for St Johns.
Cathal Davey Jack Somers and Alan Duggan each scoring a goal for Coolaney Utd. Red Cards in this game sees player (s) automatically suspended for next game and suspensions may increase once match report is received.
These results brought the Super League title right into focus on Saturday night when Calry Bohs entertained MCR at Hazelwood, while Carbury made the trip to Strandhill to very dangerous challenges for the title both facing massive competition.
A draw or win would leave MCR Sligo Southern Hotel Super League champions while a win for Carbury and Calry Bohs would bring this down to the wire how would it pan out.
Shock number one Calry Bohs took the lead at hazelwood on 39 minutes courtesy of Keelan Gethin’s and the warning Bells were ringing for MCR. The second was 19 minutes old and Bradley Fowley levelled matters for MCR and believe it or not a minute later the jungle telegraph delivered news that Strand Celtic had taken the lead against Carbury with Niall Mc Dermott rifled home a beauty of a goal.
This sent the MCR supports wild with excitement, and it got even better 10 minutes later Conor Mc Keon blasted home goal number two for Strand Celtic and it was nearly all over except to hear the final whistle. MCR battled it out to take the tile of Super League Champions 22/23 on their own merit while Strand extinguished any small hope Carbury may have held.
This brilliant achievement will be fully acknowledged when they play their final league game in Mac Sharry Park v Cartron Utd.
